Entrants for boy's names include:-

Bingo

Bloo

Boleslaw

Cack

Conk

Honestly, on every page there are about 2 names out of 20 that aren't totally insane. I'm not sure I dare venture any further ......

i got one called 'cool names for babies' when I was pregnant. It came free with a magazine. It had the most bizarre suggestions, such as 'stanley' but for a girl just make sure you don't call a boy stanley!!

I read half of that book with this face on

MIL bought us this before DC1, useless for names, excellent entertainment!

They're going from 18p second hand on Amazon (I wonder why ?!). Hours of fun

some of the things I felt they were trying TOO hard to be hip and the others were just pap

although this coming from a woman who's given her DD3 a boys name so they'd probably approve

"Spanky Cnut would probably end up having a really mundane porn star name. David Williams or something."

I choked on my tea there! I read it as David Walliams as well

gemmiegoatlegs · 02/08/2009 21:25

Hey! my great grandad (german) was called Boleslau. Tis pronounced Bol e slough. In no way does it rhyme with Coleslaw!

jodie87 · 02/08/2009 22:08

was looking in a friends book and found ikea as a girls name lol

Platesmasher · 02/08/2009 22:19

Now i'm a big fan of the more unusual names but this book is not even going to pass by my standards.

Ah! i see gemmiegoatlegs has arrived to explain. Bet you all feel thick now!

Platesmasher · 02/08/2009 22:24

TillySM, just realised i'm in my new outfit and you might not recognise me. Tis I Dragonbutter.

SpankyCnut · 03/08/2009 07:51

What do you think of my new name? I think ninedragons was a bit blah and prone to getting lost in the crowd, and I'm far more likely to stand out as Spanky.

Tillyscoutsmum · 03/08/2009 08:14

Spanky - I love the new name

. Tis definitely a boy btw but even bearing in mind Gemmie's explanation, I'm still not tempted by Boleslaw

dragons are so 2008.

Boleslaw is my dad's middle name. It's Polish. Prounounced "Bol-e-swav".

I'm not being sniffy I hope but it just shows how a lot of the "Isn't that a ridiculous name" threads on here are actually based on ignorance of names from other cultures/languages.

Dizzyclarebear · 04/08/2009 13:03

baby name books are the best! We've got one that sits on our coffee table and everyone who comes round spends a few minutes trying to find the most rediculous thing they can suggest we call our baby.

It's been no use at all in picking our shortlist, but has provided hours of entertainment for all our friends!

theyoungvisiter · 04/08/2009 13:08

Please please please name and shame this book - I could do with a larf

Portofino · 04/08/2009 13:19

I'm loving Spanky Cnut!

arolf · 04/08/2009 13:20

um, we had considered the name Boleslav - it's Czech, and pronounced 'Bol-eh-slav' - slightly old fashioned name, but not silly! (my DP is czech, otherwise it would be a silly choice). We've finally decided on Oliver which is much easier for my side of the family to pronounce Wish we'd got a names book now though, as it sounds like hours of fun!
