Which names do you predict to be the next big thing?
Those not currently very popular but there'll be loads in a few years?

I'm rooting for Percy. Everyone laughs at me when I mention it and DH has absolutely banned it but I do love it.

tummytickler · 02/08/2009 18:27

I was going to put Percy too!
And Audrey, Samantha, Ophelia, Polly

ZZZenAgain · 02/08/2009 18:28

Rodney

and possibly Hamish

tummytickler · 02/08/2009 18:30

Oh, and how about Shirley - my dd (4 in 2 weeks) loves the name Shirley - she wishes it could be her name, maybe it will be the Chloe or Olivia of 2030!

BlameItOnTheBogey · 02/08/2009 18:43

See around here (NW London) Hamish has already made a come back amongst families with a Scottish background (I know 4 little Hamishes at the moment).

LynetteScavo · 02/08/2009 18:50

Hamish was in my personaly top 10 of boys names, and it seems that any name I like shoots up in popularity.

Freakonomics has a very good chapter on this, here

bearing in mind that the US seems to be about 5 years behind us when it comes to 'aspirational names' I think he was bang on the nail:

Most Popular Girl?s Names of 2015?

Annika Ansley Ava Avery Aviva Clementine Eleanor Ella Emma Fiona Flannery Grace Isabel Kate Lara Linden Maeve Marie-Claire Maya Philippa Phoebe Quinn Sophie Waverly

Most Popular Boys? Names of 2015?

Aidan/ Aldo/ Anderson/ Ansel/ Asher/ Beckett/ Bennett/ Carter/ Cooper/ Finnegan/ Harper/ Jackson/ Johan/ Keyon/ Liam Maximilian McGregor Oliver Reagan Sander Sumner Will

Please not Julie - I've always hated it, it labelled me as a child of the 60s (I found it really weird on Desperate Housewives to see a teenage Julie)

I thought Amelie was unusual then ended up sat next to one in toddler group, and saw another in the local birth announcements so there are at least 3 the same age in our area.

I see it's listed on that cool names list that someone linked to, so there will be many more...

(Should have had a boy, not met another Miles yet, that was our boy name, but with 3 girls we're done now so one of you can have it!)

LynetteScavo · 02/08/2009 19:03

Quinn and McGregor?

Housemum · 02/08/2009 19:04

Other names on the up from conversations/babies I've seen are

Matilda
Ruby
Oscar
Theo

sweetkitty · 02/08/2009 19:06

Agnes and Trevor

dizzy - maybe the trend will be for hyphens then we will be trendsetters, people do not do hyphens!!!

Noooooo Mrs Badger, I have a Clementine and she is the only one I know. Sad to see Connie has risen to such popularity... that one is out then!

I think Lyra and Stanley.

tummytickler · 02/08/2009 20:03

DandyLioness - I had that feeling about Mabel 4 years ago when i had dd - we liked it a lot, but scrapped it from our list because i thought Mabel would rocket within 5 years or so. We went with Pearl instead - no idea how popular it is but i have met several Mabels and no Pearls!

My daughter's name is Lucy but has been called Pearl from day one so answers to that it's a lovely name but thought I'd give her something more mainstream

For girls I think Evelyn and Betty (old fashioned but so pretty).

Not sure about boys - some of the older names are already popular. Maybe Eric?

dribblychops · 02/08/2009 20:22

Oh and Nancy. I love Nancy and would consider it for DC2 but DH hates it!

asdx2 · 02/08/2009 20:35

Evelyn is really popular around here already love Nancy though

bebejones · 02/08/2009 20:38

I LOVE Marianne. Is a top choice for me too but DH hates it, and always pronounces it Mary-Anne!! Wrong! Think it is a bit too soon for 70's names to make a come back, give it another 10+years methinks!

So gutted that Oliver is SO popular as it is our name of choice for a boy if and when we have another. DD (nearly 1) is Phoebe as we didn't know any...since heard of a couple around the same age!

I think 'traditional' plainer names are making a big come back. John/James/Edward Mary/Elizabeth/Jane, & think this is a trend that might stick.

I love Tabitha for a girl & am working on DH to put it on the list!! Also Heloise. For boys I like Alexander & Logan (and Oliver!) so hoping their popularity doesn't sky rocket!

tummytickler · 02/08/2009 20:39

I love Cedric, but worry like mad that it will become the new Albert! I really want to avoid names that become popular very quickly, but i guess it is difficult to know!
I agree with Nancy and Ivy.
I think Jonathan might come back in a big way, Also Melissa.

dribblychops · 02/08/2009 20:48

bebejones - My DD is Phoebe too (she is 11 months old) but I have since met 2 others. I also love Tabitha and it's shortenings actually but DH doesn't want to name any DC after a cat.

bethdivine · 02/08/2009 20:48

A friend recently named her DD Ethel - after her gran. Ethel Rosie. Which goes back to the popular names of grandparents again.

A colleague told me of her friend who worked in a benefits office, who witnessed a woman with a baby called Chlamydia - I kid you not. Apparently the woman had seen it written down and thought it sounded really pretty like a flower. Clem / Lydia...??? Seriously, I've still never quite believed to this day that nobody in her circle knew what it actually meant. I can't see that one rising up the top 100 somehow...

bebejones · 02/08/2009 20:54

Dribblychops - that is my DH's reasoning also...but I am hoping to wear him down!

Bethdivine - I am a Lydia and was teased at school with Chlamydia....why oh why would you do that to your child?! Although I am sure I have seen somewhere that Placenta is a girls name! That has got to be worse!
