NotanOtter · 30/07/2009 21:37

next big thing

Hector
Gus
Cecilly
Clemmy ( boys/girls)
Violet
Kitty
Romilly
Inigo
Cassius ( sorry but i feel it in my bones)

maggievirgo · 30/07/2009 21:46

Wilkos, you're 'too late' with Sylvie lol. 7 years ago my dc1 was almost a Sylvie! Went for Margot in the end. There are others out there, not as old mind you. Or, well, much older or a few years younger.

4 yrs ago, my son was actually going to be Bruno, and for the first time in a long time, I'm glad I didn't go with that. (Sacha Baron Cohen's film). ...

What about Susie?! I think that that may rise, as an alternative to Sophie, but I don't think it's going to be so class-specific, like Esme... dykwim?! NOt so bourgeois ! It'll be an across the board rise which will go pretty much unnoticed because it won't be cropping up in similar circles again and again.

Lily and Suzy or Lily and Christa? Lily and Maggie?

Lori73 · 30/07/2009 21:49

well, have a look at this which is an American link from my American sister in law! So I guess it's not necessarily reflective of what will follow here. Also, she and her American friends are a bit surprised by the attitude sometimes expressed on mumsnet that 'you shouldn't use a [insert - French/German/Dutch] name if you are not [insert - French/German/Dutch]' and so it's interesting how multicultural this list is! Some of the choices I find surprising!

next big thing names are names people LOVE

i call my children names that trip off my tongue lightly but are frequently greeted with a dull yet deafening thud

no chance there then

wilkos · 30/07/2009 21:54

lily and maggie is next choice maggievirgo!

well actually marianne but maggie for short

please everyone don't all tell me you know loads of mariannes now as well. there was me thinking i was being all original and you lot have totally rained on my parade

NotanOtter · 30/07/2009 21:55

Marianne is dreamy

maggievirgo · 30/07/2009 22:02

I love the name Marianne! the only Marianne I know is an adult.

Magaly could lend itself to nn Maggie too. Perhaps too unusual next to Lily though!

I think that as we have a comeback for, horrible IMO, early 20th century names as in Hilda, Elsie, Ivy, Stanley and Wilfred-it is only a matter of time before we get Linda, Brenda, Patricia, Pauline, Nigel, Colin, Alan etc.

I have noticed that Mary is getting very popular now.

lottiejenkins · 31/07/2009 00:09

My son is a Wilfred!

Lots of people seem to love Wilfred-I am in the minority by not liking any of the Alfreds, Alberts etc.

Colin, Darren, Kevin

If you think about the sound of them without our 1970s baggage these are actually really nice names.

Amanda, Susan, Claire

As above.

dizzydixies · 31/07/2009 09:02

lockets how very dare they not like it?!?!?!?

I think we're going to have all the Serephina running about too

Rafferty
Reuben - loads of them
Noah

Mumcentreplus · 31/07/2009 09:13

granny and grandad names like lillian and Fredrick are pop at the mo..I say 70s will be back soon..like Karen, louise,Jason

Lizzylou · 31/07/2009 09:18

I know a Clemmy, it's a lovely name. She is a lovely 2 year old.

maria1665 · 31/07/2009 09:22

Our choices for DD2 were Sylvie, Margot, Bridie or Verity. We went with Verity, which I love, but secretly wish I'd stuck to my guns and gone for Margot.

maggievirgo · 31/07/2009 11:45

Piscesmoon, I also feel that names ending in 'da' might be round the corner. Not Brenda or Sandra, but perhaps Belinda, Zelda or Rhoda..

70s names like Karen, Debbie, Sharon, Tracey will not come back 'til at least 2040

tummytickler · 31/07/2009 13:10

Oh - i dont want Hilda or Jean to be popular (stamps foot).
On the boys side, i also think that Atticus might take a big leap - i see it talked about a lot on names forums.
I also think we will see more of Louise, Sarah, Anne/Anna/Annie, Caroline, Jane.
plainer names.

piscesmoon · 31/07/2009 14:02

I think we might well see the 70's names once they are old ladies. It is like Ruby and Elsie etc-they would have been very embarrassing names when I was a DC.

I think that the classics like Louise and Sarah will always be used. Sarah was my favourite as a DC and is still a favourite, I didn't go off it at any point.
