Anyone know any names that mean or relate to 'River'

Not PG yet, but this has been on my mind. For our own reasons, we'd quite like something that means or relates to river(s) but is not actually "River"

Any ideas (boys or girls)?

Failing that, other watery names....?

Well pointydog, you may be right, but it was a highland Morven who told me. So I dunno.

According to this it means 'child of the sea'. There are some other waterey names on here as well, OP.

macana · 31/07/2009 09:34

Ok, so a bit out there maybe, but Unai is Basque for river or something similar.

I quite like it but DH struck it off my list as soon as he heard it!!

lou33 · 31/07/2009 13:18

this might help

CurlyCasper · 31/07/2009 13:22

catrace 'fraid Jordan would be ruined for me thanks to Katie Price (also strikes me as religious)

.

Probably the work of a raving lunatic. my apologies. It was just for the names.

CurlyCasper · 31/07/2009 14:45

midnight don't worry about it. There were some names there to consider, so thankyou! But seriously, a documentary about mermaids? Doesn't she mean a fantasy film?

OP posts:
CurlyCasper · 31/07/2009 14:47

she doens't actually mention autopsies, but does go into the detail of mermaid anatomy. Bonkers nonetheless. I shan't be naming my child after the author!

Miranda?

I didn't know Jared was a varient of Jordan.

I had Clodagh on my girls list (3 DSs) but always thought it meant something to do with woods/trees

Ria is an excellent name

Eddy?

CurlyCasper · 03/08/2009 06:32

Thanks all

Susan they're all a bit too obvious. I'd like the name to mean river/water but not actually say it IYSWIM

devons

val Clodagh is lovely, isn't it. Not made my mind up on Ria. Eddy - a bit too close to watersports terminology, might be a point of humour with DH's mates.

haven't read the whole thread - but I always liked the name Sabrina for a girl - it is the Roman name for the River Severn.

CurlyCasper · 05/08/2009 20:30

Thanks const I had already ruled out Sabrina I'm afraid, because of a family connection. We also live very near the Severn and i would find that a bit tweet. soz!

Cordelia is a watery name for a girl

Neptune for a boy?

MitchyInge · 05/08/2009 20:34

they are both sea rather than river names obviously

OrmIrian · 05/08/2009 20:35

Flow-rence

OrmIrian · 05/08/2009 20:36

Sabina? Is that a rivery name? It seems to ring a bell.

weegiemum · 05/08/2009 20:40

There is a River Isla near where I grew up (Perthshire).

CurlyCasper · 05/08/2009 21:06

Hi weegie - so your not really a weegie then, hailing from Perthshire! I'm a far-west coaster me - nearer the Hebrides. Hadn't heard of that river. thought the name just came from the island of Islay. Anyway, good friends called their DD Isla, so I guess that's out. Iona's another island and I quite like that.

Cordelia - makes me think of Buffy character.
Neptune - I already have a second cousin named Thor - I don't think the family could handle another God!

The flo one has already been done

Sabina - not v different to Sabrina...

Please excuse my dismissive-ness and keep them coming. You know yourself when something is "right"

Thanks for the input x

BlueChampagne · 05/08/2009 22:13

Is there not an obscure burn near you that would make a good name?

Alternatively, all the way from Italy, and only one step down from a God: Tiberius?

mathanxiety · 14/08/2009 03:56

Lena (a river in Russia)? Slaney (a river in Ireland)? Lee? Leigh?

GrumpyGasper · 07/03/2010 08:40

Right, I'm back, 20 weeks gone and it's a girl - back on the name trail!

Still like this theme if anyone has any more suggestions...
