Anyone know any names that mean or relate to 'River'

CurlyCasper · 27/07/2009 15:13

Not PG yet, but this has been on my mind. For our own reasons, we'd quite like something that means or relates to river(s) but is not actually "River"

Any ideas (boys or girls)?

Failing that, other watery names....?

Sorry, formatting issues that's Awapururu

CurlyCasper · 28/07/2009 16:58

Think Awapururu might just play havoc with DH's dyslexia!

Mirama is nice, although I suspect he'll object on the grounds that we have no aboriginal roots! (I have failed to mention that he's a lover of simple, standard English names)

at Clyde - seeing as I grew up on the banks of it! (wasn't Clyde the ape in "every which way but loose", the clint eastwood film?)

so sorry bevlin I discovered the beavers brook meaning the other night (it was actually beaver run) and DH laughed somewhat audibly.

Spanish is probably a no, no, as he has spanish family through marriage and they'll probably think we're trying to copy.

Eleri is very pretty. Think I'll put it on the list, draft one. thanks alex

Has anyone said Isis - greek Goddess of something Life, also the old/Oxford name for the Thames. I woudl have quite liked it if DS had been a DD, expecially as DH is from Gloucestershire and I am from London - so we are joined by the Thames.

Thanks yet again for all the suggestions!

kaylo thanks for coming over! I'm afraid with DH being a Man U fan, the river connection for Rio would be lost...

Linnet Kyle was my aunt's dog, so that whole side of the family would laugh - a lot!

TeamEd Hafren is pretty, but living so close to the welsh border and the severn, it is the name of various buildings etc near us, so I don't think child would fair too well. Same with Sabrina (Shrewsbury river boat) which is also my cousin's wife's name.

bikerunski (tired just reading your MN name!) Yes, Isis is on my list

Meggle Can you just imagine, she goes to school as Missi and has to explain she's actually an MI-SSI-SSI-PPI! Plenty of others there, which I will look through. Some are a bit too different. And DH surfs at Croyde when he can...

Thanks again!

Wow curly you're up early! Well it seems early when it says 06:37

Kaylo · 29/07/2009 09:42

silly me forgot to finish message before posting!! ooooops

My dh is a Man-U fan too! I had to force him to have that name as I loved the name River but dh didn't and tbh I wasn't sure that I was brave enough to call the child River anyway - so Rio seemed a bit more normal iykwim.

Theres some lovely names on this list - Isis is stunning for a girls and I like Niles for a boy - very different but I love it it is officially on my favourites list!! When I eventually get pg that is.....
Eleri is very sweet and lovely too.

Great thread you've got going Curly andit's a wonderful theme for a name - some excellent suggestions coming through for you

There's a river called the Malago near where I live, and one of my neighbours had it as his middle name.

lou33 · 29/07/2009 10:45

tallulah is north american indian and means laughing or bubbling water, there is a tallulah falls in georgia

dylan is welsh and means man of the sea

ninah · 29/07/2009 10:47

I like Ria for a girl

TwoHot · 29/07/2009 17:39

Talyn (Cornish River)

CurlyCasper · 29/07/2009 20:42

yup kaylo I am an early bird. Usually on MN after updating my tempting chart over breakfast!

I certainly wouldn't call the kid River. But, being Scottish, I most definitely would not get away giving my child an England footballer's name. But the feminine version Ria is sweet.

Still kinda liking Tallulah, but not so malago

I fear Dylan might have been another of the brats DH used to work with.

And I liked Talyn - until I thought of the Estonian capital Tallin. aaaarrrrggg, too many connections! Good job I've started on this before TTC. could be a long haul!

Isis is right up there for me if we eventually have a girl. NN Sissy or Issi (izzy)

Orin? Not sure of the spelling, but I believe it's old English for river (and have friends who gave the name to their ds)

choosyfloosy · 30/07/2009 02:05

Tamar is fab - even better because in fact a Biblical name as well as the river connection.

Abhainn is amazing.

Moses?

CurlyCasper · 30/07/2009 09:00

Sorry choosy we want to steer clear of biblical. I do love Abhainn, but think DH will need a lot of convincing.

Orin comes up in searches I have done as Gaelic for pale - which would be appropriate if baby takes after me! Would have thought it was a girl's name though - but it is indeed for boys. Oops, Just found another definition which would clash with surname... Orin is now out.

bet you call him John

midnightexpress · 30/07/2009 10:47

Morven means 'mermaid' in Gaelic and is lovely.

CurlyCasper · 30/07/2009 11:58

meggle There is no him/her/it yet, but i can assure you it won't be John, as that is my uncle and grandfather's name! I get the point though - probably end up with something simple.

I can think of some lovely names from within the family, but would really rather not go down that road with first names (perhaps middle though, particularly to continue the tradition from both of our families of boys taking their father's first name as their middle name).

Fact is, I'm not after exotic, just the meaning with the right name, and possibly a connection to our Celtic roots (mine more than his). Douglas means dark river, and would be a contender were it not the name of one of DH's best friends.

midnight morven is lovely - as is my first cousin, whose name it is! Quite popular at home in Scotland, where we have the Morvern hills.

OP posts:
pointydog · 30/07/2009 21:28

I love Morven but I don't think it means mermaid

Washersaurus · 30/07/2009 21:32

Sabrina is something mythological to do with the River Severn - I think she got thrown in.

Catrace · 30/07/2009 22:27

Has anyone mentioned Jordan? Means flowing down as well as the obvious geographic connection.

Jared is a variant.
