It's short for Katherine

MovingOutOfBlighty · 22/07/2009 10:03

No, I know loads of Kittys and think it is adorable.

My friends have Katherine as her 'back up name' for one of the Kittys I know. Think this is a good idea but not essential.

lou33 · 22/07/2009 10:06

my friend calls her daughter kitty , but her real name is kathleen

myredcardigan · 22/07/2009 10:07

Why is it comical?
I have a Kitty and she is Catherine though it would have been easier to have called her Katherine.

There are at least 2 Mnetters I can think of who have DDs with the standalone name of Kitty.

I think it's lovely, but then I would.

mrsradders · 22/07/2009 10:08

i really like kitty but daddy would say no...it is short for katherine i believe so you could go with that and call her kitty xx

lou33 · 22/07/2009 10:10

i should say that i had considered the name kitty for one of my children, but i have a niece called tabi and it seemed a bit too cat themed, but i do like it v much

myredcardigan · 22/07/2009 10:13

Why is it ok to shorten Catherine to Cat with no cat references but no so Kitty?

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 22/07/2009 10:22

can't do Katherine, weird family reasons - you know what it's like . Kitty is cute but is it acceptable for an adult? I think so but reckon dh would veto it.

I know an adult Kitty (aged 38); she is great and the name seems funky and cool, not childish. She sometimes calls herself Kit. I love the name, personally

TsarChasm · 22/07/2009 11:04

My grandma was Kathleen, but called Kit/Kitty.

I like Kit and Kathleen. Not so keen on Kitty though.

3ofeach · 22/07/2009 13:31

my DD3 is Keturah nn Kitty. Love Kitty obviously but didn't like Katherine and think Keturah is fab and works to be shortened to Kitty.

My sis calls me Kitty, I am originally Katherine, always called Katie and I love Kitty. If I could persuade everyone who knows me to call me Kitty I would!! Go for the short version, I hate my long winded name that only comes up in the doctors surgery!!

BikeRunSki · 22/07/2009 21:29

I had a great aunt who was Kitty for Kirsten.

littleducks · 22/07/2009 21:31

My cousin is really a Nikita but called Kitty

Kitty's a great name, wouldn't bother with Katherine if you like Kitty. I do know a Caitlin who is always Kitty.

GoldenSnitch · 23/07/2009 08:08

Kitty is lovely, but if it were mine I would was a "grown up" name too...

Katherine
Kaitlin
Kirsten
Kathleen
Katrina
Caroline
Katrina

I used to know a Kizzy....

myredcardigan · 23/07/2009 10:09

I 'bothered' with Catherine because I like the name not just for her.

Although she's usually Kitty, we do sometimes call her Catherine and I like having the range IYKWIM. DD1 is Elizabeth but 90% of the time is Lizzie.

jellybeans · 23/07/2009 10:42

It's a fine name. Nearly all names have been translated or changed from their originals anyway so there is no such thing as a 'proper name'. I know 2 kittys. One is a doctor of about age 60 and one is 10. Both have Kitty as their full first name. I never heard anything bad said about them or by them about it.

YoGabbaGabba · 23/07/2009 11:14

My friend is called Kitty (short for Katrina)and it really suits her.

dorothygale · 23/07/2009 12:02

i love Kizzy- there's a character is a children's book (the diddakoi) called that; it's short for Kezia in the book

qumquat · 23/07/2009 16:04

If my parents had called me Kitty I would definitely have liked to have the choice of being called Katherine, which is a much nicer name imho!

Hulababy · 23/07/2009 16:10

My auntie kit was called kitty when younger. Her name is Kathleen.
