Cosimo/Marmaduke/Percy? What do you think?

I love the name Duke. Percy is cute and Cosimo sounds cool I think? I don't talk to family and friends about names so I thought I would ask here.

We already have a Bruno, Hector and Myles.

Everyone has different names atm, I knew kids called Brittany, Arizona and Paris all in the same class at school! And if we all liked the same names, life would be pretty boring hey.
(but I still stand by my views on the names-I defo like Ricky-Rack though cuz it made me smile big time!)

dustbucket · 19/07/2009 21:11

There are a few others but I don't really like them as much.
Vitorio
Ambrose
Kaisar
Francisco
Walter

ZZ I'm sorry I missed your post there.

All of the names are family names including my ds's names and the proposed names.

Vitorio- ?
Ambrose-ia creamed rice
Kaisar-cheifs
Francisco-actually rather liking this!
Walter-tooooo old, gorgeous for an old man but not a baby (and of course old men were never babies

ZZZenAgain · 19/07/2009 21:28

So it's a fairly limited group to choose amongst. Quite varied names though really, aren't they?

Well, I'm warming to Cosimo actually, Percy wouldn't be my first choice for a boy but it is ok. Walter similar to Percy in that it is a non-exotic and also non-problematic name but perhaps not outstanding in any way. This in itself might be a good thing though.

I still have problems with Marmaduke but other posters seem to like it.

Which name does dh prefer?

dustbucket · 19/07/2009 21:30

Ah, he likes Duke!

ZZZenAgain · 19/07/2009 21:31

he likes Duke and you love it

dustbucket · 19/07/2009 21:34

I favour Cosimo though. He was lovely and I think it sounds cool. I have a long time to think about it.

ZZZenAgain · 19/07/2009 21:41

when's the baby due?

skidoodle · 19/07/2009 21:42

Of the three, cosimo is my favourite.

Marmaduke is a bit preposterous, but that can work. I really don't like Duke though, it's a bit trashy and you lose the good things about the full name. Did the relative shorten it?

I have a slightly irrational loathing for the name Percy.

I love that you are choosing old family names

Iggi999 · 19/07/2009 22:02

Unless you are home-schooling them, please don't! If it can be slagged off, it will be (speaking as a secondary teacher). You could honour your relatives with middle names, perhaps?

MartinBlankWasMyFirstLove · 19/07/2009 22:27

Oh FGS anything can be slagged off. You can't chose a name on that basis. Plus, I think op has made it clear that her dc go to school with similarly named children so doubt whether they would raise an eyelid at a Cosimo. At my dc school it's the boy called Michael that is the oddly named one.

Iggi999 · 19/07/2009 22:44

Maybe I'm just bitter coz DP wouldn't agree to the (slightly) hippy name I wanted!

MartinBlankWasMyFirstLove · 19/07/2009 22:51

it was my dh that wanted the really odd names:

Quercus
Pepper
Silver
Django (well, that one might have been me)

Now, I'm going to have to regenerate again, because anybody who knows me has heard ALL about QUERCUS.

Iggi999 · 19/07/2009 23:00

LOL, she-who-used-to-be-MartinBlank.

Theteathings · 19/07/2009 23:07

I like the names for your dc actually.

Quite like Cosimo. Used to know a Cosimo, very nice boy.

Marmaduke is a bit mad isn't it? But if you think you can get away with it...

Now Percy I think is a bit terrible, mainly because my sis calls her car Percy - Percy the Fiat Panda

dustbucket · 20/07/2009 08:52

Homeschooling? Are you mad?

I don't by your arguement for a minute. I have only heard one boy teased at school because of his name and he gets called "Jack, Jack the bum crack!"

MamaHobgoblin · 20/07/2009 12:51

I think you either have to be extremely landed gentry (apologies if you are! ) to carry off Marmaduke, or a shortarsed fey in a fantasy novel featuring a white unicorn.

Duke is a dreadful shortening of the name - sorry, but it is. Sounds really downmarket and more like a dog's name, in any case.

Cosimo de Medici? Interesting precedent, but I agree with the poster who pointed out that if you already have a Bruno, it looks very Nigella and people will point and laugh.

I quite like Ambrose, actually. My dad's a Francisco but also foreign, which helps.

Percy makes me think of willies or Blackadder, and Walter is in The Beano... neither of which should be a problem with his school mates, of course.

dustbucket · 20/07/2009 14:56

Jesus, do you think people,um, in real life will know so much about Nigella? I didn't and I know a fair bit.

She is a MN godess of course...

Hi :-)
We are due our first boy, after 4 girls, in March. He will be Marmaduke after my husband's grandfather and greatgrandfather. We love it and he will be shortened to Duke. Personally, I like the family connection, the equine connotation and think it's cool.
Percy would have been my daughter's choice, I like it but it doesn't feel right for us but is gorgeous for a youngest boy.
Cosimo I love, I know a little boy shortened to Coz or Cozzie by family and it is very cute.
Good luck with your pregnancy and naming conundrum. It's so funny, reading your post and some of the quite negative reactions only spurs me on, knowing Duke is right for us!

glastocat · 04/02/2012 12:19

They are all beyond awful. I honestly don't know which name is the worst!

noddyholder · 04/02/2012 12:21

I like them all esp Percy

PopcornBiscuit · 04/02/2012 12:23

I like Marmaduke best of the three.

SeaweedNK · 04/02/2012 12:27

All lovely names I'd definitely consider all of them ...... for a family pet. I wouldn't dream of inflicting any of these on a DS though.

Do these pretentious posters ever actually think that the poor child you are bestowing these outlandish names on will spend the rest of their lives having to cope with it???
