Rowan as a girl's name?

In light of a recent thread about boys' names I am now feeling a little concerned that Rowan is seen as a boys name only. I am expecting DC3 who will be DD1 and have Rowan on my list of possible names.
I am nearly 38 weeks though so may be a little over sensitive ! The other name on the list is Darcy/Darcey (not sure to have the 'e' or not!).
Is Rowan a no for a girl?

I had Rowan picked for a girl. Sadly only ever had boys.
To me it is a girl's name. I KNOW it can be a boys' name, I know a couple and it suits them, but for me - she was going to be Rowan. Had to call me lovely boy something ele instaed. You go for it. None of this Rowena crap!

hoochymama · 11/07/2009 19:06

love the name for a girl, didn't even know it could be a boy's name!

qumquat · 11/07/2009 19:09

I've always thought of it as a girl's name, and I love it!

MollieO · 11/07/2009 19:14

Tis Policywonk's name so your dd will have to be well dressed and witty at all times!

Will someone PLEASE tell me which children's book about a school had a girl called Rowan in it? I do remember she was a great character - made me love the name Rowan for a girl...

HumphreyCobbler · 11/07/2009 19:27

An Antonia Forest female character is called this. I really like it.

buttercreamfrosting · 11/07/2009 19:35

x post - that's it! Attic Term etc...
Thank you!

HumphreyCobbler · 11/07/2009 19:39

that was a serendipitous x post!

I thought it was just a boys name. I would certainly associate it with a boy rather than girl. It's nice-ish, nothing special though.

Firawla · 11/07/2009 19:56

I think its considered a name for both.
You could make it spelt Rowanne then it's very clear, although I think it changes the pronounciation.
Personally I like Rowanne or Roanne alot more than just Rowan

roundabout1 · 11/07/2009 20:02

I like the name - we know 2 boy Rowan's & 1 girl Rowan. DD does get confused by unisex names though!

Scorpette · 11/07/2009 20:17

Rowan Pelling, the journalist and former editor of The Erotic Review, is a woman and a damn cool one at that!

Pyrocanthus · 11/07/2009 21:57

I think it's very pretty. The only association I have is Atkinson, which might be a point against, but otherwise I'd prefer it for a girl.

Clary · 12/07/2009 00:05

I know 2 boys called Rowan and one girl.

We know the girl best tho so I always think of it as a girls' name.

I think if a name is "wavering" it is better as a girls' name as it probably will become this in the end (eg Carol, Evelyn, Hilary, Beverley and then more recently names like Taylor, Morgan etc)

NanaJo · 12/07/2009 04:14

I think one of Brooke Sheilds' daughters is called Rowan. Lovely name. I rather prefer it for a girl than a boy.

Deemented · 12/07/2009 08:07

I love the name Rowan, but without the W - so it'd be Roan.

dizzydixies · 12/07/2009 08:12

Deemented Roan would have been DD3's name had she been a DS - we loved it too

MoChan · 12/07/2009 09:23

I completely think of Rowan as a girls name. Possibly because the first (only?) person I've ever known with this name was a girl I went to school with. I think it's lovely.

paisleyleaf · 12/07/2009 10:23

and there's Rowan Williams

MamaMimi · 12/07/2009 13:41

Rowan was a strong contender for dd2 through the pg and even for a while after she was born 4 wks ago.

We wanted a name that has an association with 'red' as dd1 is Ruby.

In the end we changed our minds because we didn't want the confusion that can occur when a name is unisex, so that if someone saw it written down they wouldn't know if it was a boy or girl, iyswim.

I still love it for a girl tho' and if you aren't bothered about this factor you should go with it.

Deemented · 12/07/2009 18:11

Have been thinking about the name Roan loads today, and am seriously considering the name Roan Wynter if this one is a girl. What do you think?

macaronie · 12/07/2009 18:42

Prefer it as a boy's name

MissGreatBritain · 12/07/2009 19:17

the only rowan i know is female and i think it's lovely. DS has 2 Darcys in his class - one a girl and one a boy, so you're not safe there either!
