How would you spell Frida, Frieda, Freida?

If our baby is a girl, we are going to give her this middle name. It was my beloved grandmother's so PLEASE try not to criticise it. We'd just love some help with the spelling.

(the reason we aren't giving her my grandmother's spelling is that it was spelt Freda and I don't like that spelling as it looks too much like "Fred").

I am leaning towards Frida because of the wonderful artist. But then Frieda is nice because of the Ted Hughes poem.

Let me know what you think. Thanks

Frieda I think
Frida looks a bit like Friday without a y?

Doctorskidaddle · 26/06/2009 16:56

I would go for Frida because of Kahlo as well - lovely name btw

steamedtreaclesponge · 26/06/2009 17:01

Frieda, definitely

Frida looks like it should be pronounced like Frid-ah (as in fridge) rather than Freeda which is presumably what you'd be after

Bonneville · 26/06/2009 17:21

But Freda is the correct spelling. I agree with Steamed that Frida sounds/looks like Fridge. And Frieda is like Fried-ah as in fried egg.

chaya5738 · 26/06/2009 17:27

Thanks everyone. It seems there are problems with all spellings but most people think Frieda.

Bonneville, how is Freda the correct spelling? I am confused. My grandmother's name actually got anglicised when her family immigrated from Eastern Europe so I am not there is any one correct spelling.

Frieda would be pronounced Fried-ah though (oh I see someone has said that and I totally concurr)

Freida is OK I suppose but I would have gone for the traditional Freda

I think Frida does not look nice for some reason but I don't know why

chaya5738 · 26/06/2009 17:43

Would Frieda REALLY be pronounced Fried-ah? While I can see why it could be pronounced that what by someone who had never heard or seen the name would people honestly make that mistake?

Thanks everyone for the advice. You are pointing out things that hadn't even occurred to me!

mrsruffallo · 26/06/2009 17:46

SpawnChorus · 26/06/2009 17:48

Freida must be in year 6 at primary school by now.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 06/02/2019 23:42

💕 Frida, fabulous name !

Bubastes · 07/02/2019 00:58

Frida. Like Ms Kahlo.

MikeUniformMike · 07/02/2019 18:41

Freida not Frieda

KarineAimee · 07/02/2019 18:59

Yes to Frida - Frida Kahlo was awesome.

millymae · 07/02/2019 19:37

I would spell it Frieda. I had only ever seen it written as Freda until a relative bought my little on a Steiff baby doll that was called Frieda.

diddl · 07/02/2019 20:40

How did your GM spell her name?

Frieda is a well known spelling-can't see how it would be mispronounced.

Sophronia · 07/02/2019 22:41

Definitely Frida. Frieda makes me think of fried things.

walkerfreida · 16/06/2020 03:42

I know this thread dates back a while, but figured I’d add my two cents. 🙂 Mine is spelled Freida, but is often misspelled by folks who believe it is spelled Frieda. Personally, I’m grateful I got the e-i version. I feel phonetically it is the most proper.

mysteryhouse · 16/06/2020 03:56

Frida. I'm Mexican so definitely Frida Khalo has kind of established that as the 'proper' spelling for that name.

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 16/06/2020 04:13

Freda is the traditional British spelling. Just be prepared, if you choose one of your alternatives, you’ll have to get used to correcting people on the spelling all the time.

Freida is pronounced Fry da. Like Freitag.

The correct spelling is Frieda, pronounced Free da.

I can't imagine why anybody would criticise, I LOVE this name, and was hoping you were using it as a first!

I like all spellings but prefer Frida, personally - I think it's the simplest and cleanest, and I like the Kahlo connection.

As a pp said, I worry with Frieda you'd get misspellings of Freida. I suppose this isn't likely to be a problem with a middle name though!
