Looking for ideas for our first, and this is my shortlist...would very much appreciate opinions!

Girls (middle name would be Frieda or Katherine/Kate):

Elsa
Meg
Daphne
Bridget
Natalie
Maggie
Jessica
Greta

Boys (middle name would be Philip or Paul:

Ned
Sam
Matthew
Rowan
Jamie
Will

DP likes Arthur and Alice best, but I'm not convinced!

All thoughts welcome! Thank you!

My favourites out your girls' names are Elsa and Alice. Out of your boys' names Ned, Will and Arthur.

Hassled · 23/06/2009 16:51

Jessica or Maggie.

Jamie or Will.

Jumente · 23/06/2009 16:52

Bridget, definitely...Good with Frieda or Kate.

Greta also lovely but not so good when combined with middle names.

Boys - Ned, Sam or Will. Arthur is good too.

MamaLazarou · 23/06/2009 17:12

I don't like Meg, Maggie, Will, Sam or Ned, because I am not a fan of nicknames-as-names.

Jessica always strikes me as a very glamorous name, but that's because my sister is Jessica and she looks like Nigella Lawson!

Rowan is nice, but I prefer it for a girl.

LaDiDaDi · 23/06/2009 17:17

I like Elsa (on my list already) and Daphne.
Jessica, maggie and Natalie are all ok.
Really don't like Bridget, too harsh sounding imo.

I love Will, less keen on all of your other boys choices but I like Arthur and it's on my boys list.

jellybeans · 23/06/2009 17:51

I like these...

Meg
Natalie
Jessica

Sam
Matthew

I like Rowan for girls.

tummytickler · 23/06/2009 20:34

I love Daphne - that is on our list!
Also Greta, Maggie and Elsa.
My favourite is actually Frieda.

Boys - I love Will (William) and Rowan - I went to college with a lush bloke called Rowan, he was very arty, intelligent, kind, good looking and genuine. I have wonderful associations with the name Rowan - love it!

ThePhantomPlopper · 23/06/2009 20:46

Elsa - Nice.
Meg - Not my taste.
Daphne - OK.
Bridget - OK.
Natalie - OK.
Maggie - Not my taste.
Jessica - OK.
Greta - Doesn't really fit in with your choice in middle names.

Ned - Love Ned.
Sam - Like.
Matthew - Fine.
Rowan - Like.
Jamie - Not my taste.
Will - OK.

janeite · 23/06/2009 20:50

Rowan, then Matthew then Sam (but would have Samuel) for the boys.
I don't like any of the girls' names, sorry but Meg is the best of the list imho.

Alice is fab. Arthur is not good.

nooka · 24/06/2009 04:35

Well Greta, Meg and Maggie are all forms of Margaret, so I'd go with that, and then you can use them all My dd has Frieda as a middle name, so that's obviously fabulous! Margaret Frieda. Sounds very nice.

I like Bridget and Natalie and Jessica too (although Jessica doesn't go with Frieda)

Of your boys names I like the long versions for Ned, Will and Jamie, and William and Rowan too. Not so keen on Sam.

Tambajam · 24/06/2009 06:20

Don't like Daphne. Not hugely keen on Bridget. Rest are fine. Like Meg, Elsa, Maggie. I don't think Greta Frieda is a good combo at all.

I wouldn't choose Alice over others on your list.
Like Ned, Rowan, Sam.

Mammina · 24/06/2009 10:07

I like Elsa and Greta best out of your girls names (only one I dislike out of them all is Bridget)
Really like Ned, and Rowan is on my list for DC2 if it's a boy but am worried about it being thought of as a girls name?? (even though I've always thought of it as a boy's name)

I love Frieda too which is my girls' list

pinkpetunia · 24/06/2009 12:04

elsa and matthew. full stop.

(I'm picky )

oliverboliverbutt · 24/06/2009 12:05

Elsa - no
Meg - prefer meghan
Daphne - no
Bridget - no
Natalie - no
Maggie - love it
Jessica - no
Greta - love it

Boys (middle name would be Philip or Paul:

Ned - cute
Sam - no
Matthew - no
Rowan - no
Jamie - prefer this to all the others
Will - no

Nancy66 · 24/06/2009 12:57

Elsa - love this, great name not overused and very classy.
Meg - it's ok, but ordinary
Daphne - no, awful. 50 year old hairdresser's name.
Bridget - I like Bridey, the shortened form
Natalie - no, bit common
Maggie - really like this one
jessica - dull dull dull
Greta - great name

Ned - like it, good strong masculine name
Sam - ok
Matthew - dull
Rowan - nope
Jamie - very very wet and wussy name
Will - like it.

IveGotHamButImNotAHamster · 24/06/2009 13:00

Thanks everyone for your honest opinions...it is looking like Ned and Elsa come out top, which were secretly my favourites too

OP posts:
gegs73 · 24/06/2009 13:03

Elsa- really like this
Meg - mystic Meg, not keen
Daphne - don't like at all
Bridget - OK but think of Bridget Jones
Natalie - boring
Maggie - love it
Jessica - my favourite girls name ever
Greta - quite cute but wouldn't be my first choice

Boys (middle name would be Philip or Paul:

Ned - really like it, but a bit of a dogs name.
Sam - love it
Matthew - OK but don't like the name Matt
Rowan - no
Jamie - like it but lots of them
Will - really like it

angrypixie · 24/06/2009 13:23

Ned or Arthur

Elsa (although used a lot for guide dogs??) or Alice

Really loathe Natalie - several unfortunate associations.
Bridget will always be Jones now to me, and the others are just not my taste at all.

8oreighty · 24/06/2009 13:26

I have a thing about names that are short for longer names being used as names in themselves...so for instance Meg...I would assume it was short for Meghan? and Will would have to be short for William...etc...

makingdotoo · 24/06/2009 13:32

Girls (middle name would be Frieda or Katherine/Kate):

Elsa - i have an elsie (middle name also kathrine!), elsa makes me think of born free. so a no.
Meg - family guy lol. I quite like meg.
Daphne - no. potential for nasty name calling like daft knee.
Bridget - jones. Bit pretentious.
Natalie - my evil cousin. Name is quite nice though.
Maggie - i like maggie
Jessica - my rabbit :O no
Greta - makes me think of an old lady. No.

Boys (middle name would be Philip or Paul:

Ned - flanders. no no no.
Sam - I like sam but doesnt really go with middle names.
Matthew - i like this with paul.
Rowan - tree fruit pastilles. mmm. yes i like rowan with philip.
Jamie - no.
Will - s'okay. not with either middle names though.

So best two...

Natalie Kate
Matthew Paul

thell · 28/06/2009 01:51

You've got my current two faves in there! Bridget (Bridie for short)
Ned (Edward or Benedict for long)

Greta is also good, and I like Rowan because secretly I would have liked to be Ma Larkin and name 500 children after plants

Sam and Alice i used to really like, but popularity has made me a bit bored with them. Really nice names though.

MrsMattie · 28/06/2009 18:27

Girls - love Maggie and Greta. The rest - meh.

Boys - Sam, Will & Matthew all great names. Not keen on others.
