Harper for a boy

snitchintimesavesnine · 20/06/2009 01:04

My sister emailed me to ask my opinion on her names. The list is only four names long Charlie, William and Joseph are the others.
Harper is the favourite. I'm not keen and I thought it was a girls name.
Would you try to put her off it, or do you all like it? She has asked me after all.

No. It's much too feminine. It wouldn't work imho.

Scorpette · 20/06/2009 01:21

The only reason people know of Harper as a name is cos of Harper Lee, the woman who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird, so people will think of it as feminine, although it's not, necessarily. Harper was actually quite a masculine name to give a little girl, but it's common to give kids of either sex surnames as first names in America.

Bound to be called Harpic in school.

Bad enough for a girl, frigging woeful for a boy....Charlie, William and Joseph are all lovely (if safe) names.

sliceoflife · 20/06/2009 16:46

no, no no!

janeite · 20/06/2009 16:53

I don't like it. Joseph is the best from her list imho.

Firawla · 21/06/2009 11:58

I don't like it for either but it's definitely classed as a girl's name so may lead to teasing on a boy

Momino · 22/06/2009 15:21

Gregory Peck's grandson is called Harper.

We've just called our dd3 Harper. i love the name but was a bit unsure about it at first as a lot of people did think it a boy's name

someone asked me 'the baby's name as we were out on a walk, i said it was Harper and he said, 'ah, a boy then?'...

IMO i think it works for both.

ilikeyoursleeves · 22/06/2009 15:35

I know a girl called Harper!

CliffordtheBigRedCat · 22/06/2009 15:38

Sorry dont like it

prefer Charles, William and Joseph

MamaLazarou · 22/06/2009 15:40

They will call him Parper at school.

Talking of Harper Lee, I am currently loving Atticus.

heavenstobetsy · 22/06/2009 15:47

I've kind of surprised myself by quite liking it actually!

...... as for your sister, even though she has asked for your opinion it doesn't actually means she wants it especially if you are about to tell her you don't like her favourite name. I'd tread carefully if I were you

mrsradders · 22/06/2009 15:58

oh i like Harper i do think of it as a boys name though.

I have friends whose last name is Harper and hubby gets refered to as Harper.

I wouldn't choose it for a girl as i prefer girly names, but it is personal choice and if you know it is your sisters fav then i would say you like it.
xx

Hulababy · 22/06/2009 16:03

I don't like Harper, sorry. Charlie, William and Joseph are all lovely and much nicer IMO.

Have also never heard of Harper for a boy although it does actually sound more masculine. Mind you have only heard it as a girl's name once, and that is on some children's programme.

screamingabdab · 22/06/2009 19:29

It is a girls name. As a general rule I don't like Surnames-as-First-Names, but Harper is an exception because it is such a good book. (IMVHO).

screamingabdab · 22/06/2009 19:29

The others are all good, solid boys names. Not to be sniffed at.

janeite · 22/06/2009 19:30

Atticus is "lovely".

MrsMcCluskey · 22/06/2009 19:32

Its a girls name

janeite · 22/06/2009 19:32

Agh - first time I've tried to bold and I failed because my keyboard has gone mad. It is a LOVELY name! lovely

hana · 22/06/2009 19:35

like it as a girls name

charles is v wet name
as is joseph

like William (Will)

ThePhantomPlopper · 22/06/2009 19:37

It's a girls name, but I prefer it as boy's name. Problem is, it sounds like a surname.
