ds3 was born on fri and is yet to have a name, poor little love.

shortlist is (in no particular order):

Noam
Lars
Nico
Soren
Lucien

please help me choose one. the name I absolutely adore has been well and truly vetoed by DP. so we're compromising and as a result have these 5 names that we both like but now can't choose between.

a couple of noteworthy points:

  1. constructive criticism welcome. downright rudeness and pointless "i hate them all" posts really not necessary (please. i have just given birth and am hormonal as it is!)
  1. yes, we are aware that Noam could sound like gnome. we have discussed it and the name is still on the list.
  1. PLEASE no more suggestions! we've only just managed to narrow my list of 21 names down to this few lol. don't need any more confusion

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Sorry, pressed post too soon.

Nico is nice but I'm not sure it goes with Linus and Gabriel wheres as think that the sound of Noam does go with them though it's not my taste iyswim.

Lucien is nice but still think Soren is best.

magbags · 16/06/2009 19:37

Soren is my favourite from your list.

The children's programme Charlie and Lola has an imaginary friend character called Soren Laurenson, which I always quite liked! I know you don't want to add any names but also quite like Sorley, which is quite similar.

peppapig3 · 16/06/2009 19:48

Congratulations!

I really like Lucien and also Soren although I hadn't heard this name before.
I actually like Noam but perhaps because of the Chomsky association.

Nico is not bad.
Wouldn't personally use Lars as it is too similar to Linus.

thisisyesterday · 16/06/2009 20:32

ooh my thread kicked off, excellent. the sign of a good names thread that is imo

well, we'd managed to narrow it down to Nico and Lucien but then i read the thread again and got all confused and realised I still like all of them.
gah

Lucien would be pronounced loo-see-un

middle name will probably be Nicholas, unless we choose Nico in which case it will be either Charles or Monroe

to address the issue of unusual names/spellings etc I would like to point out that I have an incredibly ordinary and very popular first name.
it happens to have several different spellings.

my surname is also very bog-standard, but also has 2 variants.

so despite my "normal" name I ALWAYS have to spell both parts out.

Lucien is my fav.
Congrats btw

LaDiDaDi · 16/06/2009 21:30

Monroe is a fab middle name.

Lucien Monroe

Nico Charles

Soren Monroe

All good combos imo.

I think Soren Nicholas and Lucien Nicholas run into each other too much.

GossipMonger · 16/06/2009 21:34

Nico Monroe is fab!!

Another MNetter has a Lucien but it is pronounced Loo-shun so be prepared for people getting it wrong.

do the test

'This is your Captain Nico Monroe Webster speaking...'

'All rise please for Judge Nico Maynard.'

Am preferring Nico to Lucien as I find the Luci bit too feminine!

slowreadingprogress · 16/06/2009 22:27

Lucien I don't like I'm afraid - I just think it's not an attractive name somehow, specially if pronounced loo-shun

Nico - I like - stylish and strong

my fave is Soren. Lovely, strong but gentle name!

tattycoram · 16/06/2009 22:33

Lucien or Lars

GossipMonger · 16/06/2009 22:42

for me Lars is a polar bear

and Soren Lorenson is Lola's friend!

Go with NICO!!!!!!

thisisyesterday · 16/06/2009 22:45

i think it's going to be Nico

just had a last-ditch attempt at convincing dp that my absolute fave name (Asa) is the right name. but he won't have it at all [sobs]

i feel a bit sad.

OP posts:
GossipMonger · 16/06/2009 22:47

Asa is biblical too. Nice name. I know a couple.

Nico Asa Monroe???

Asa is spanish for handle hmmm - not great. Nico is much nicer than Asa.

I spoke to a man who was going to call his 3rd daughter Rana (Spanish for frog). I couldn't keep quiet about that either, and I really, really feel bad about blurting that out.

missmem · 17/06/2009 14:49

Personally I think Lucien is the only name I would choose. The rest sound like "look at the name we've chosen for our kid". No offense meant, and I'm not saying you are doing this, but they may be perceived as if you'd be trying to make a statement.

boodleboot · 17/06/2009 15:54

Lars i think....definetly not Noam. I studied Noam Chomsky and how words work during my philosophy degree and he was only philosopher i really DID NOT LIKE .....congrats on your new son.

totalmisfit · 17/06/2009 16:12

Soren - as in Soren Kierkegaard. possibly my favourite philosopher and a name i've considered too, before realising i'm not Danish!

thell · 18/06/2009 21:47

Ooh, Thisisyesterday, that sounds really good - Nico (Asa) Monroe

I don't think I picked it out of the list did I? But it's really growing on me. Good good choice

BikeRunSki · 18/06/2009 22:05

Nico and Lucien.

FanjolinaJolie · 19/06/2009 17:30

I think Noam would set him up for a life of teasing at school.

Nico I like the best.

Lars/Soren are both scandi names, aren't they? Are you or DH scandi?

Lucien sounds quite flowery for a male name, I think.

MarshaBrady · 19/06/2009 17:32

I really like Lars, Soren and Lucien.

Sazisi · 19/06/2009 17:42

I like Soren best. They are all nice though
