ds3 was born on fri and is yet to have a name, poor little love.

shortlist is (in no particular order):

Noam
Lars
Nico
Soren
Lucien

please help me choose one. the name I absolutely adore has been well and truly vetoed by DP. so we're compromising and as a result have these 5 names that we both like but now can't choose between.

a couple of noteworthy points:

  1. constructive criticism welcome. downright rudeness and pointless "i hate them all" posts really not necessary (please. i have just given birth and am hormonal as it is!)
  1. yes, we are aware that Noam could sound like gnome. we have discussed it and the name is still on the list.
  1. PLEASE no more suggestions! we've only just managed to narrow my list of 21 names down to this few lol. don't need any more confusion
OP posts:

Love Lucien and Nico.

seeker · 16/06/2009 14:14

Because it will be misheard as Noah, misspelled as Nome, and teased as Gnome.

gagamama · 16/06/2009 14:16

Oh and congratulations!

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 14:18

Bollocks it will. Or at least if it does happen, it will come from exceedingly thick people, and if we're going to cater to them we might as well all call our DCs [insert over-used naff name here].

TwentiethCenturyHeffa · 16/06/2009 14:21

I like Nico and Soren best.

CurryMaid · 16/06/2009 14:22

Congratulations.

Would you pronounce Lucien like this: Loo-see-yun

or like this: Loo-shun?

Cos if it's the first then that's my favourite but not if it's the second way.

Tinker · 16/06/2009 14:23

Don't like the sound of Noam (I'm an anti-Noah person as well, which seems the oppostite to the whole of mn)

TwoSunnyDays · 16/06/2009 14:48

Soren and Lars are the most trouble free and easy to live with for a child or adult, and I like the sound of them both.

seeker · 16/06/2009 14:53

I don't think you need to have to be exceedingly thick never to have heard the name Noam before. But maybe I move in less exalted circles than you spawn chorus. I bow before your erudition and culture.

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 14:58

Well I'm glad you know your place seeker

Actually though, I was referring to the fact that people who tease about names are generally pretty thick. And do you really have prolems with names you've never come across before? Life must be a bit of a struggle for you.

CurryMaid · 16/06/2009 15:05

Ladies, keep it nice please.

callalilies · 16/06/2009 15:05

I like Soren. Wouldn't have Noam with a surname beginning with M.

seeker · 16/06/2009 15:06

No, I don't struggle with names I haven't heard before, but I do have to ask sometimes how they should be spelled or pronounced. And speaking as someone who has a bog standard and very tedious first name with a slightly unusual spelling it is a serious pain in the neck to have to spend your life saying "No, that's with a C not a K" Why give a child an additional burden, however small. Oh, and on the subject of people who tease about names being thick - have you met many 12 year old boys?!

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 15:44

You can say that about soooo many names though seeker. I have an unusual surname which I always have to spell out. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. And with regard to 12 yr old boys teasing about names, I do know a few and they are as likely to find a "hilarious" pun on a perfectly ordinary name as they are on an unusual name.

seeker · 16/06/2009 15:51

But you can't do anything about a surname (I've got one of those too!), Why not just make life as easy as possible for your child? Life can be tough - why deliberately add in another factor you don't have to?

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 16:14

Like you say, perfectly commonplace names can have variant spellings: Jonathan/Jonathon, Katy/Katie, Stephen/Steven etc etc

And much to your chagrin I'm sure, it's only going to get "worse". So many people are choosing non-standard spelling of ordinary names that everyone will probably end up being asked how they spell their name.

MaggieBee · 16/06/2009 16:16

Lars - like this one and I think it works really well in amongst the Bens and sams and Maxes, but it's still a bit different.
Nico - LIke this one too.
Soren - Like this one.

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 16:16

Also, I could have chosen to change to my DH's surname (extremely common) but there was NO WAY I wanted to lose my unusual name.

MaggieBee · 16/06/2009 16:18

I am very interested in names, and I'm not thick, but I've never heard the name Noam. I would have to ask somebody to repeat that a couple of times before I was sure of what I've heard. THat doesn't make me thick........

EyeballshasManBoobs · 16/06/2009 16:18

Lucien is gorgeous. Soren is too much like Seren and also reminds me of Soreen.

SpawnChorus · 16/06/2009 16:41

Of course that doesn't make you thick. People who persistently pronounce or spells names wrong or, even worse, tease someone because of their name are thick though. No right-minded person would be bothered about the occasional misspelling of their name, but it would be irksome to have to deal with repeat offenders. That would apply to any name though, unusual or commonplace.

I really like Soren and it goes with your other choices imo.

Lars is too much like Linus.
