We currently have Bronwyn and Emrys.

As much as DS is pleading I am not planning to call the new one Baby Gus (he did actually sob over that today ).

Please list oodles of welsh names of both genders. I will offer many thanks but can't see me being polite enough to comment on every single name (but bonus points for honesty yes???)

I have looked on too many sites now and the names are all merging into one - feel like this way I can just show DH a thread of names and it will be simpler

differentID: i have a particular fondness for buddug, but it was long ago vetoed by DW, as was the boys name Iolo.
Our DD is a Nest. At first i was not sure when DW suggested it, but i came to love it (especially after reading up about Nest ferch Rhys) and am so pleased we went for it as it really suits her.
When in wales it is completely accepted, but in england we get alot of 's. I remember telling someone her name (after a few drinks) and, after seeing their reaction, saying "I'm not a f hippy, IT'S WELSH" (not that there's anything wrong with being a hippy...)

Pingpong · 09/06/2009 23:22

I think the phrase 'our DD is a Nest' is unfortunate!
Our DD is called Nest or our DD's name is Nest is better.
To most people nest is a verb or a noun not a name. I can't say I'm surprised at the reaction you've had.
I've only lived in Wales a wee while but I've never heard of it.

differentID · 09/06/2009 23:27

Nest is a very old Welsh named, Nesta is a variant of it.

Pingpong · 09/06/2009 23:37

Mmm heard of Nesta

Frizbe · 09/06/2009 23:37

I like Teleri, Rhia/Rhianna, Isolte, quite like Efa too, also like Nia, Saffir and Seren, I'm not doing boys names, cause I think you're having another girl!!

FfreckleFface · 09/06/2009 23:42

We've got a Ffion and a Seren. (Seren is a dog though. I was GUTTED when I found out I was having a girl, because that would have been our first choice name, but we had already named the dog, and couldn't really name the baby after the dog...)

For boys I like Ieuan, Iestyn, Grufydd, Ianto, and Owen.

Paleodad · 09/06/2009 23:58

Smac: To most [english?] people nest is a verb or a noun not a name....
except if you're Welsh, then to most people it is also a name, with an old and distinguished lineage (thanks differentID).

TrillianAstra · 10/06/2009 00:35

Okay, DP grew up in Wales and he knows some names that (he thinks) haven't already been said.

That is not to say they are good names though, I have had gin and am just typing!

Elenid (girl)
Llewellyn (boy)
Olwyn (girl) (archaic)
Caradoc (boy) (archaic)
Seirian (girl) (nice one apparently)

If it's a girl call it Trillian, pretend that's Welsh (you might have to pronounce it with one of those throaty noises though)

PS How do you pronounce your DS?

Ah well Smac I thought she'd be even more unique than she is, never mind. do they say Oola or U'la? Just out of interest.

We've got a 40 year old welsh baby name book which we got hers from, wouldn't surprise me that it's slightly cooky as it's from the 60's.

My DH is Welsh and we decided on Idris for my DS as it is also an arabic name (Idris was a prophet of Mohamed in the Koran) so is not unheard of in the city we live in.
I was very keen on making sure that DS wouldn't have to spend his life spelling out his name and liked the fact Idris is easy to read and say for English people ;)
Now I'm preggars with number 2, I'm starting the search again.....
Girls ...Seren, Aneira, Eirlys, Mabli, Cadi, Efa, Iola.
Boys.... Emhyr, Madoc, Osian, Iolo,Gruff, Cian.

CravingOlives · 10/06/2009 11:53

I love Iolo for a boy, but H put his foot down and refused to use it.
