What associations does this name hold for you?

I love it, but sooooooo common. I know of 8

wrinklytum · 08/06/2009 21:38

Like it but it is very popular.

BananaFruitBat · 08/06/2009 21:39

I know 2 Joshuas. One is 5, the other is 8. Both are fab little guys, so I am biased towards it. It was also our reserve name for DS.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/06/2009 21:40

Like it a lot - don't know any but I have a bit of a lisp so would never chose it for any of my dc!

dinkystinky · 08/06/2009 21:41

Love it - is our DS1's name and suits him perfectly. It is very popular (we were at a party on Sunday where there were 3 Joshuas of different ages - though 2 of those were known as Josh) so not one to go for if you want to be unique.

kalo12 · 08/06/2009 21:41

can't understand why its so popular. don't like it at all.

its an odd combination of sounding overtly posh and overtly chav at the same time

hulabula · 08/06/2009 22:15

I personally don't like Joshua at all - I find the 'a' ending a little feminine sounding.

Also sooo common - there are 3 in my ds's reception year.

Tommy · 08/06/2009 22:18

I think it's a lovely name. We would have considered it but my cousin has a Joshua.

There are quite a few if them around but, hey that's what happens when names are fashionable

ChasingSquirrels · 08/06/2009 22:20

I have one! Wierdly he is the only one in his school, but one of 6 in his Beaver group.

MumtoCharlieandLola · 08/06/2009 22:23

Do you think that you could say popular rather than (soooo) common .

My Joshua is 7 and he was called that before it became so popular but then we named our son after The Joshua Tree because my dh and I both like U2 and we discussed it the first night we met.

Then again my second ds was supposed to be called Madeleine but came out with 10% extra !

ChasingSquirrels · 08/06/2009 22:23

and although he is Joshua on his birth certificate (and that was always what the baby was going to be if it was a boy), from about day 2 he was Joshie, and shortened to Josh.
He doesn't seem like a Joshua to me as no one ever refers to him as such.

MumtoCharlieandLola · 08/06/2009 22:24

And as for the overly chav comment [hmm} ...............................

TaurielTest · 08/06/2009 22:33

I rather like it. It makes me think of the (music hall?) song that goes "Josh-yoo-aa, Josh-yoo-aa, nicer than lemon squash you are..." - but I guess if that's your name, then people singing that at you might get a little old.

goomum · 08/06/2009 22:34

Surprised Joshua got hit with the chav comment. Mind you another thread said that Joshuas were on the list of names to be feared by teachers. Shocking! I always thought it was a solid, traditional, biblical name. Anyone else think it is 'chav' for want of a better term?

ChasingSquirrels · 08/06/2009 22:35

lol - my mum used to sing that to my JOsh, I had never heard it before - thought she had made it up.

MumtoCharlieandLola · 08/06/2009 22:36

Well definitely not me

cheekster · 08/06/2009 23:14

Have we hit a nerve mumtocharlieandlola?

We are just stating the truth, Joshua IS soooo common.

Can we say 'popular' instead?

Its still a lovely name though

nooki · 09/06/2009 10:30

Personally I don't like Joshua - and yes, it is very common. I know 3 under 5s.

justlookatthatbooty · 09/06/2009 11:01

My DS is Joshua and we don't know any other Joshua's!

Interesting how people can get so hot under the collar about names. Interesting also that people are so put off by popularity...... a beautiful name is a beautiful name. And that is always a matter of personal association. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

To me Joshua is a treasure of a name.
