Philip - what's wrong with it?

Seriously, I'd like to know!

I had really quite liked Philip for a boy...but it was rather negatively received on MN.

I wouldn't want my potential DS to suffer from an awful name but it might be a shame to miss out on a good traditional name that's not too popular at the moment.

I like it - so I'm no help at all

KingRolo · 29/05/2009 19:04

Prince Philip?

Nah, like it. It's just not a 'now' name is it?

suwoo · 29/05/2009 19:10

I know someone with a 3 year old Phillip. I can't put my finger on why, but it always sounds strange. Maybe I see it as a name of my generation (70's)?

tummytickler · 29/05/2009 19:11

Oh and Pip is such a cute nn for a little chap!

norktasticninja · 29/05/2009 19:11

No idea OP? It's not a name that appeals to me for my own DC, but definitely not a bad or wrong name IMHO.

norktasticninja · 29/05/2009 19:12

Not quite sure where that question mark came from, was supposed to be a full stop...

If you like it, use it. Why does it matter what others think?

lljkk · 29/05/2009 19:18

I like it.

nkf · 29/05/2009 19:19

I like it so I'm useless. I can't see what the objection might be.

letsgostrawberrypicking · 29/05/2009 19:26

I think it's like a lot of names - nothing special, just a bit boring. Nothing really wrong with it apart from that. Just think of all the "Philips" you know - Schofield/Glenister/Fern's hubby. Middle-aged kind of name

wb · 29/05/2009 19:33

Nothing wrong with it at all.

There are only 6 names or so that are 'safe' on mumsnet (and even then you'll get a couple of dissenters saying they are too popular) so unless you want to call your child: Millie, Tilly, Ellie, James, Ben or Ethan then don't worry about it

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 19:35

it's probably because it reminds a lot of us of Philips we Have Known.

In about 30 years when our children have never even laid eyes on a Philip, let alone snogged one, it'll be interesting and cool again

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 19:38

This is what's wrong with it:

fil·lip (flp)n.

  1. A snap or light blow made by pressing a fingertip against the thumb and suddenly releasing it.
  2. An embellishment that excites or stimulates: "Spritely tabasco onions, just a little crunch for the top, were an added fillip" Alison Arnett.
  3. One that is trivial or of little importance.
tr.v. fil·liped, fil·lip·ing, fil·lips
  1. To strike or propel rapidly by as or as if by a fillip: filliped his finger against my ear; filliped the pretzel across the counter.
  2. To stimulate or arouse.

----------------

[grin ]

pick one of those, just one, as your 'my name means' answer for your child to give in peer discussions.

nickytwotimes · 29/05/2009 19:39

I like it too.

nickytwotimes · 29/05/2009 19:41

pmsl at me putting that after NF's definitions!

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 19:44

It's the pretzels and the onions that got me I'm afraid

Seriously - if you like it, use it - it'll be sweet on a little chap. God knows mine have weirdy names..

Terrance and Philip from South Park.

hippipotamiHasLost29Pounds · 29/05/2009 20:48

Dd has a lovely little friend called Philip. His nickname is indeed Pip.
I love it - not outlandish or made-up, but he is the only Philip in a school of 600 children!

Go for it, I think it is a great name!

Megglevache · 29/05/2009 20:51

I think it's a fab name

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 20:56

Pip is lovely, agreed...

jollyjoanne · 29/05/2009 21:06

I like Philip too, but DH wouldn't have it as it is his dads name. Could also use 'lip' when a teenager a la Shameless!

whiskersonkittens · 29/05/2009 21:19

Well my 6 year old son is called Philip so I am clearly biased!!!

It suits him; he has never been called Pip (never thought of it!) but is starting to be 'Phil' to his friends.

We used to call him 'Philly' - despite the cheese - but never in front of his friends as it really is a bit babyish

I have met a few other children with the name but not many.
