Philip - what's wrong with it?

Seriously, I'd like to know!

I had really quite liked Philip for a boy...but it was rather negatively received on MN.

I wouldn't want my potential DS to suffer from an awful name but it might be a shame to miss out on a good traditional name that's not too popular at the moment.

I love it.

dancingqueeen · 29/05/2009 21:42

I like it

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 21:46

Phillipe is better. imo.

But only if you have a continental thing going on.

janeite · 29/05/2009 22:02

Nowt wrong with Philip and Pip (unlike Great Expectations - yawn) is lovely.

annasmami · 29/05/2009 22:32

Not sure what you mean with 'Continental' NationalFlight, but in German, Dutch, and Scandinavian it's either Phillip or Philip. It was a very popular name in Germany about 10 years ago, so seems a little 'dated' now, but nothing wrong with it.

MaggieBee · 29/05/2009 22:37

I like it. Pip for short. Christopher/Kit
Richard/Richie. I love these left-aside classics. They will come back eventually.

piscesmoon · 29/05/2009 22:38

I like it. I should ignore opinions on MN-no one ever agrees anyway!

boodleboot · 29/05/2009 22:57

I have a totally gorgeous both inside and out cousin, who is more like a brother called Phillip and for that reason alone i think the name is amazing.....Pip is great NN. I don't think its square at all....

NationalFlight · 30/05/2009 07:35

Lol Annasmami, you have me there, I meant 'French'

NationalFlight · 30/05/2009 07:36

I couldn't imagine it in German at all - is it really popular??!

OracleInaCoracle · 30/05/2009 07:49

dh is called phillip and it really suits him, and its ds's middle name. its a lovely traditional name thats not over-used or old fashioned and ages much better than something like ximone

SheDancesTheFlamingo · 30/05/2009 08:16

It was my dad's name and consequently DS' middle name (also my brother's). My father was named after an uncle lost in the first world war so it has become a family tradition to pass through the generations.
I think it's a very noble name.

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2009 08:22

Definitely due for a comeback, I reckon.

My sis registered her youngest daughter as Philippa on birth certificate. But she changed it to Emily after a week or so because her other kids kept calling her "Flipper."

DD2 (two) has a little mate in nursery called Richard, btw.

MrsMattie · 30/05/2009 08:24

It is a horrible, horrible name. The only name worse is Phillipa.

NationalFlight · 30/05/2009 09:40

See, I just don't understand how so many baby boys managed to get called Kevin. Or Keith. How, how did that happen? Did people like it, or just think it was fashionable and cool?

Mystery.

Megglevache · 30/05/2009 11:19

oh I am finding that Philipa and Richard are making a real revival around here. We know three baby boy Richards and about the same of baby Jonathans. I like it- makes a really nice change from Archie and Alfie-Lees IMO.

Megglevache · 30/05/2009 11:19

Isn't kevin untra trendy in France right now?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 30/05/2009 12:02

MrsMattie - that's my name. Phillipa, not Philip! I like it!

I think Richard with nn Richie is making a comeback. It is not that rare. I read in the paper that NOBODY was being called Richard anymore, but I know of a couple under five.

piscesmoon · 30/05/2009 21:26

I think that Richard is lovely, it is a classic like Philip, so there are always a few.

at Flipper - love it! Only young Philip I know is indeed 10 years old and has German mother. Don't think it's at all naff or uncool but maybe just a little old fashioned.

ScummyMummy · 30/05/2009 21:47

I've just always hated it. Not sure why. It gives me the impression of a man who is very deeply dull yet tinged with an irritating smugness.

annasmami · 30/05/2009 22:05

Yes, Philip (Philipp) was VERY popular in Germany around 1999/2000 - it was in the top 10 for a few years.
