using middle name as first name

I notice there are often threads here from parents asking is it ok to use a middle name as the child's first name. I came across this link showing hundreds of famous people who go by their middle names - it's an interesting read and goes to show it is fine to do so! I never knew Sean Connery's first name was Thomas!

I am known by my middle name and it has caused no end of problems. It started at school. I even had one awkward teacher who refused point blank to call me by my second (usual) name. All my bank cards have been 'wrong'; I have to use my first name when making appointments at the doctors etc; my educational certificates, driving license etc are all 'wrong'..I could go on. I vowed I would never do this to my dcs. What makes matters worse is that I absolutely hate my first name!

My brother has always used his middle name. In fact I only found out when I was 15 and a teacher told me.

Maybe it's a scottish thing - I know a few people who do this.

My first husband went by his middle name and I only found out when I registered his death, not meant to be morbid, it was quite funny and typically him!

Actually, I also only found out that my grandfather also went by his middle name (he died in the early 70's) last year. I thought mum was losing the plot whem she kept saying that his name was X. I had never heard anyone refer to anything else than 'Ned'.

When we were clearing out mums things after she died, there it was in black and white on his birth certificate! Sorry mum!

It's traditional in my family for the eldest boy to have the same initials and to go by his middle name. My dad and granddad do but my bro hated it as people were always calling him by his first name so he changed it around (thus breaking the tradition and causing a bit of a ruckus, but he has 2 girls anyway). My dad and granddad have never complained about it though. Maybe it depends on the names?

I agree with Bonneville, I use my middle name and it's a right pain in the bum!
