Ellie or Nellie?

Hello, am new to this but I have a DD due in September and need some help. DH and I have settled on Eliana as DD's name to be but can't agree on nickname. I know we should maybe wait to see what evolves but my issue is that while I love Eliana I'm not keen on Ellie as a nickname. I wanted to pick an unusual name and Ellie, while nice, is not unusual. Maybe Nellie isn't that unusual either, but I really like it and I think it's a bit more quirky. So should it be Ellie or Nellie - please help me convince DH!!

I think either one is fab{grin]

Wolfblass · 27/05/2009 22:20

I do not like Ellie as i know to many - so if i HAD to choose one it would be Nellie - but i'm really not keen on either

Why not just use the name Eliana?

I went to school with an Eliana and it wasn't shortened.

It's so much nicer than either Ellie or Nellie.

You'll probably end up calling her Monkeypants or something when she's born.

NellieTheEllie - what a fabulous name!!

Nellie

yogabird · 27/05/2009 22:34

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus... so go for Nell

LessThenIdeal · 27/05/2009 22:35

Or as a nn you could use Ana or Li, but i much prefer the full name, withouth shortening it to anything.

thell · 27/05/2009 23:30

{grin} My daughter is called Monkeypants!

Nyx · 27/05/2009 23:42

I love Ellie, but Nellie just makes me think of Nellie the elephant, same as yogagirl. I agree Nell is nice though.

MamaG · 27/05/2009 23:43

PLEASE don't pick Nellie - if she has ANY puppy fat at all as a teen, she'll be labelled nellie the elephant

dooit · 27/05/2009 23:44

Nell.

MrsBonJovi · 27/05/2009 23:48

Ellie...never nellie...just reminds me of elephants...sorry.

Love Eliana though

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 27/05/2009 23:50

Nellie was my gran's nickname, from Helen I think. She was born in 1902, if that helps any.

Ok thanks everyone. It looks like Nell may be the winner- I think. But it is probably a good point that we don't need to abbreviate the name because Eliana is lovely as is (well, I think it is anyway.... I hope DD agrees one day). And I take the monkeypants point too

Eliana is a beautiful name - what's more it's short enough not to really need a nn. Both Ellie and Nellie have very obvious teasing potential - they rhyme with smelly - not nice! Plus Ellie-phant is just as likely as Nelly the Elephant.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/05/2009 02:15

Ooh, dunno about "short enough not to really need a nn". I "hear" it as four syllables, El - li -an -a. The temptation to shorten it will be strong.

jabberwocky · 28/05/2009 02:36

Elle is nice and could be pronounced "ellie" or "el"

Xavielli · 28/05/2009 06:42

My Eliana is a Nellie.

Xavielli · 28/05/2009 06:44

It just evolved as that by the way. If there are any other children in your family they will say 'Elly-narna' anyway

So we ended up going from Eliana - Ellie-narna - Nellie-Banana - Nellie

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2009 09:51

I think nicknames tend to "out" themselves once the baby is born and evolve as you get used to the baby.

My DS's nickname in based on his middle names.

My sister went from Zoe, to Bozo to Bo. It took her about 30 years to claim Zoe back!

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 28/05/2009 09:53

anna?

MaryHuff · 28/05/2009 10:12

Lia?

Xavielli · 28/05/2009 11:48

Personally, I don't think Anna would work because it isn't pronounced Ellie-Anna.
