Jorja/Jorga

My friend who is due to give birth to a little girl very soon, has asked my honest opinion on the choice of name.

She wants to call her Georgia, but spell it one of the above ways. I did tell her I wasn't keen on these, think it's a lovely name but should be spelt "Georgia".

She seemed quite offended, , and thinks the "Georgia" spelling is to conventional. Any opinions? Didn't want to upset her, was just stating a fact!

I think Georgia is better as she will constantly be asked to spell it or others will spell it incorrectly on forms which she will then have to change - also Jorja and Jorga look like made up names.

They may look like made up names, but there's an actress, Jorja Fox, born in 1968--so not a recently made up name.

I kinda like it, but yes, she'll be dooming the kid to a lifetime of misspelling/correcting people.

Looks like a made-up version of Georgia to me & seriously naff unless their surname is exotic enough to carry it off!
I too think Georgia is a lovely name BTW just don't see why you'd want to mess with it - if it's too conventional go for something else!!

Nope, her birth name was Jorja-An and on some things she did she was credited as Jorjan (misspelling or on purpose, I don't know). Her parents were from Montreal so maybe it's a more common spelling there?

I would assume Jorga was pronounced Yorga with a hard G, like smorgasbord.

Why do people do this? If you want an unusual name, fine, but giving your child a popular name and then misspelling it just makes you look like you can't spell, and condemns the child to a lifetime of having to 'correct people and spell out their name.

Sorry, rant over. It's one of my pet hates . I guess it's her (hormonal) call...

I would also assume the parents couldn't spell (and that they were, um, how to put this nicely ... actually, I don't think I can put it nicely, so I shall leave it at that!)

Teachers have a great laugh in the staffroom over spelling like these, I can testify .......

Just because there is an actress with the same name spelling doesn't mean it is the way to go. There are plenty of actors'/actress' names I wouldn't dream of copying, lol.

I thought Jorga was pronounced with an H like Hor Ha, like Jorge.

You were right to tell your friend the truth! I agree - Jorja I would pronounce "Yorja", and Jorga I would pronounce "Jor-gah" - with a hard 'g'. And they both look awful when writen down, whereas Georgia looks nice.

Is she German or Swedish or something? (Mind you even then it would be pronounced Yorja which is just as vile! Because if she isn't I would think she was thick or common or both to be honest, why would anyone want to make up their own spelling of a name?

Next we will have Jain or Elizabef or something equally hideous!

Little disclaimer here, my only purpose in pointing out that it was the name of an actress was to show that the mum in question hadn't 'made it up' (as was said a few times) and that the name had been in existence for over 40 years.

Despite my thinking it's kinda okay, I probably wouldn't use it due to the spelling thing, and I'm a fan of more 'traditional' names!

In my mind it is spelt Georgia, and spelling it another way screams of trying too hard to be different. Poor kid would spend her whole life having to spell out her name.
