I love this name but would it encourage Gabby (which I hate!)?

(Lola, am not following you round, honest!)

Gabriella is lovely!

dingledangle · 17/05/2009 15:35

It is likely to be shortened to Gabi......

bronze · 17/05/2009 15:36

unless you get in there first with Ella

LovingTheRain · 17/05/2009 15:36

My children want me to call the next one Gabriella as they love the name since High School Musical. I love it. I prefer 'Ella' as a nickname rather than Gabby

dingledangle · 17/05/2009 15:39

Trouble is other people will just shorten it (or the child will themselves!). More likely to be Gabi than Ella IME.....

MrsMattie · 17/05/2009 19:28

I know a Gabriella who is nicknamed Bree.

Lovely name.

hulabula · 18/05/2009 09:28

The only Gabriela (German spelling) I know is known as Gabi (with a long aa).

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/05/2009 15:13

I know a Gabrielle who is always, always known as Gabrielle.

bodiddly · 18/05/2009 15:19

How about Gi Gi for short?

gladders · 18/05/2009 15:28

was just going to ask this very q....

I think it's really unlikely that a Gabrielle could get away without being called Gaby at some point?

Gi Gi and Bree are awful - Ella is ok but if you like Ella, why not just call them Ella?

Nekabu · 18/05/2009 16:54

I like both but think you'd be very lucky to escape her being called Gaby otherwise it would have been on my shortlist too!

MommyHasaHeadache · 18/05/2009 17:03

I have a Gabriella and no-one calls her Gaby. Can't bear Gaby - we actually do call her Gigi for short as does everyone else now! As long as you get in there with what you want to shorten it to 1st (if you want to shorten it at all!), you will find people will follow your lead (well, I did!)

Fimbo · 18/05/2009 17:06

I also know a Gabriella that is never shortened. Her mum made it clear it wasn't to be and the girl herself tells anyone off for trying to shorten it.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/05/2009 17:45

Mommyhasaheadache and Fimbo are right, IME. If both mother and daughter perfect their Paddington stare, the chosen name will not be abbreviated. My daughter, my niece and I all have very easily abbreviatable names, yet they never are because we made it plain that we didn't want it.

Or are we perhaps just a family of baattleaxes?

lastboxoftampons · 19/05/2009 11:00

I have a friend called Gabrielle and we never ever call her Gabby - it so doesn't suit her. More than anything we refer to her as G...

KathyBrown · 19/05/2009 19:55

Lol just spotted this, I would not allow Gabby for as long as I had a say in it I guess it depends how much you hate it as a nickname.

bodiddly · 19/05/2009 20:30

Mommyhasaheadache .. I love the name Gigi ... oh for a little girl so I can use that name! I don't think my ds would appreciate it much!

iwanttolearn · 21/05/2009 11:05

I know a few Gabrielle/llas. Most prefer Gabby, though.
