Names that 'go' with Matilda

matildamum · 16/05/2009 21:30

Hi there, we're expecting our 2nd baby in 6 weeks time. DD is called Matilda so I'd like it to 'go' with her name. I like old-fashioned, but fairly unusual names. (i.e. don't want he/she to be one of several in class with same name.) I don't like discussing names with family/friends so would really appreciate some feedback/alternative suggestions on the following:

Girl- Clementine, Clemency, Jemima, Tallulah, Mabel (but maybe is too many M's, our surname starts with M too!)
Boy- Rafferty, Stanley, Finbar (DH's middle name, he's Irish!)

Thanks so much.

Girls - I like Mabel. Tallulah too but neither old-fashioned nor unusual.

Boys - Stanley is OK.

Ewe · 16/05/2009 21:35

If your Matilda ever goes by or might want to go by Tilly you can't go for Tallulah. I like Jemima though.

I have given this thought as I have a Matilda (Tilly) too.

I like;

Florence
Edith
Kitty
Beatrix
Eliza

i don't think a name ending in a would go. what about Alice?

i know loads of stanleys now. i like Finbar.

Ewe · 16/05/2009 21:35

I like Stanley but know a few so think may be on the rise popularity wise. Love, love, love Rafferty though.

mollymawk · 16/05/2009 21:38

Well, Matilda was the name of several queens in Norman times (get me!) so you could go for matching historical names eg Eleanor, Richard, William etc. You will need a chart of "King and Queens of England". We have a DD who is DC3 - that's where we got hers!

Paolosgirl · 16/05/2009 21:39

I only like (love actually) Clementine from your list.

weepootle · 16/05/2009 21:41

I have one too and think Florence goes beautifully. Unfortunately I can't use it because of my surname.

numal · 16/05/2009 21:51

Matilda and Clemency are gorgeous together.

dizzydixies · 16/05/2009 22:06

Matilda and Penelope known as Tilly and Nell would be my favourite

Matilda and Phoebe
Matilda and Evelyn
Matilda and Amelie
Matilda and Celeste
Matilda and Cecelia
Matilda and Nancy
Matilda and Emily
Matilda and Ruby
Matilda and Beatrice - Tilly and Bea

I like Rafferty from your list and Stanley goes nicely with Matilda

what about

Arthur nn Art?
Gabriel
Finian
Hugo
Cassius
Reuben

Fimbo · 16/05/2009 22:08

Edith

Struan

matildamum · 16/05/2009 22:53

Thanks all so much for feedback. Weepootle - thanks, I'd forgotten Florence, I love it too , should have been on the list. Hi Dizzydixies - Emily is my name so can't use that, or Amelie either probably but like Cecilia and Celeste. |You're right Ewe, Tallulah doesn't really tick my boxes so think it will go from the list - i just like the name, probably from a childhood fascination with Bugsy Malone!

Rafferty is probably my fave boys name, but my Irish DH thinks it sounds like a 'pseudo' made up Irish name....

dizzydixies · 16/05/2009 22:57

Matildamum Cecelia is DD2's middle name and I only wished I'd saved it for DD3 and used nn Cece

DH was plugging for Celeste and I wanted Clementine

in the end we went with Cordelia

Rafferty was on our list for a boy but 3DDs so we've not had a chance

katiestar · 16/05/2009 22:59

Martha was my first thought or Mary
I really like Clementine ,wanted it for my DDs but DH didn't as we already have 2 children with names beginning with C

dizzydixies · 16/05/2009 23:27

Matilda and Imogen
Matilda and Violet
Matilda and Josephine nn Josie/Posie
Matilda and Iris
Matilda and Susannah nn Susie

thumbwitch · 16/05/2009 23:34

my first thought was Henry for a boy but I don't know how unusual that is at the moment.

girls:
Henrietta
Harriet
Penelope
Agatha
Evadne

boys:
Henry
Stephen
Alfred
Wilbur

tummytickler · 17/05/2009 08:52

I always thought it would be lovely to have a sibset called Iris, Matilda, Beatrice, Jemima adn Florence. Thise names are just such a perfect match to me - I only got one of them though (and one for her mn) as dh wasnt having any of it!

weepootle · 17/05/2009 09:54

Oh yes tummytickler, those are lovely too. I really wanted dd2 to be Martha but dh didn't like it.

ilovepeppapig · 17/05/2009 10:37

i like jemima from your list.

Have you considered :

Sophia
Collete
Phillipa (pippa)
Zara
Rachel
amber
anna
Molly
Martha

boys

Elliot
Oliver
william

MrsMattie · 17/05/2009 10:42

I like your boy's names. Finbar is a great name.

not so keen on your girl's names. I think Clemency in particular would be a very hard name to live with.

What about:

Penelope
Hermione
Ivy
Laura
Annabel / Annabeth
Christabel
Rose names - Rosa, Rosalind, Rosanna, Rosamund, Rosalie etc
Eve / Eva
Kitty
Agatha
Florence / Flora
Jospehine
Winnie

MrsMattie · 17/05/2009 10:44

Or Irish girl's names?

Aoife
Caoimhe
Sorcha
Grainne
Roisin
Deidre
Aislinn
Saoirse

???

warra · 17/05/2009 11:27

I too have a daughter Matilda (Tilly) and due baby number in about a week - we have chosen Florence or Beatrice for a girl and Dylan or Finlay for a boy. Secretly hoping for another girl!!

MrsMattie · 17/05/2009 11:30

Beatrice is lovely.

Elizabeth or Eliza?

dinkymum · 17/05/2009 12:28

LOVE Jemima wanted it for DS if he had been a DD and Finbar's lovely especially as it has meaning behind it too.
good luck and congratulations x

ruddynorah · 17/05/2009 12:36

another matilda here.

we're thinking for dd2 (no boy name ideas..eek)

alice
elsie
iris
mabel (dh says no way!)

dd1 thinks brum would be a good name for a boy.

MrsMattie · 17/05/2009 12:37

If I'm totally honest, I think Mathilda and Mabel are a bit 'comedy' together.
