... because I like the name, but not Roderick, which I think it can be a nickname for, but don't really like the idea of giving a nickname as a proper name.

I thought Rory was a proper name. Can't think what it could be short for!

Tinker · 15/05/2009 19:40

I'm sure you can give it as a complete name but, yes, it is the short name for Roderic(k)

madwomanintheattic · 15/05/2009 19:41

rory is a proper name lol.
think ruairidh.
roddy is short for roderick.
rory is just rory.

Amapoleon · 15/05/2009 19:42

Rory is a name in its own right too.

belgo · 15/05/2009 19:42

Aurora

Plonker · 15/05/2009 19:42

Rory is a name in its own right. There is another way to spell it, Ruiradh, I think its Scottish?

Lovely name

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:42

its very much used in its own merit in Scotland meaning Little Red One or Red Haired
or just Red

does it have to be short for something?

bluebump · 15/05/2009 19:42

Gregory maybe at a push? I like is as a name on it's own, it's one of my new favourite boys names.

pointydog · 15/05/2009 19:43

can be short for Roderick

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:43

or Ruaidhri maybe?

Plonker · 15/05/2009 19:44

Sorry Ruaridh

'tis a very difficult name to spell

MrsMattie · 15/05/2009 19:44

Ruiari is the Irish Gaelic spelling. Rory is the anglicised version. It's a proper name.

Overmydeadbody · 15/05/2009 19:44

It's a proper name in it's own right.

pointydog · 15/05/2009 19:45

rhuaridh is just the scottish gaelic version of rory

lou33 · 15/05/2009 19:45

i have a rory

Plonker · 15/05/2009 19:45

That was to my own post dizzy, not yours, lol

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:46

Plonker regardless of how Scottish I am I still had to google it

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:47

pointydog in that case Rory is just the anglicised version of Rhuaridh/Ruiari

pointydog · 15/05/2009 19:49

yes, exactly

pointydog · 15/05/2009 19:49

I just meant rory could not be short for ruariosh as they are the same name, different spelligns

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 20:00
