I'm now two weeks away from the big day, don't know if it's a boy or girl and haven't given names much thought. Could I get some brutally honest opinions on these to help me cut the list down? The boys list is a bit thin, could do with some ideas...

Girls:
Lois
Iris
Aneka
Penelope (long shot)

Boys:
Monty
Sonny
Ari

LilRedWG · 15/05/2009 10:24

Girls:
Lois - no
Iris - yes
Aneka - no
Penelope (long shot) - yes

Boys:
Monty - no
Sonny - definite no
Ari - no

Sorry - if you like unusual names, how about Myers for a boy. It was my Grandad's name and I would have liked to have used it if DD had been a boy.

weepootle · 15/05/2009 10:25

I'm afraid being brutally honest, I don't like any of them except maybe Penelope.

mummybroccoli · 15/05/2009 10:26

Gosh, boys names are always more difficult I think, 14 hours after he was born we chose Adam although it was Louis until DS was born and he didn't look like a Louis!

Are girls name was always Nimah (pron. neave) right from the start, although the two weren't linked like in the Bible (lol) Adam was a friends name who very cheekily recommended it himself and we liked it so much, we decided it was his name

Thunderduck · 15/05/2009 10:56

I like Ari, I know a few Aris and I like Penelope.

crokky · 15/05/2009 10:57

I don't like any of your boys names, but Lois and Iris are nice for a girl.

hobbgoblin · 15/05/2009 10:59

If I was going to chop one name of each list it would be aneka and sonny.

MrsMattie · 15/05/2009 10:59

I like your girls names. Penelope is my personal fave.

Sonny is sweet for a boy but I wonder whether it would be better as a nn? Not keen on Monty at all. Ari nice but a bit nick-namey, too. Mind you, I wouldn't burden a child with the name Aristotle

Cies · 15/05/2009 11:00

From your girl's names I like Iris a lot, and Aneka and Penelope are ok.

I quite like Monty. What about using Montgomery (sp?) as a full name and Monty as nn?

Heated · 15/05/2009 11:06

Agree with Crokky, definitely Iris or Lois.

For boys what about Albie (Albert), Marcus, Saul, Julian, Arty (Arthur), Patrick

knickers0nmahead · 15/05/2009 11:07

i like iris alot. Not keen on the boys although ari is quite nice.

SamJamsmum · 15/05/2009 11:09

How are you pronouncing 'Aneka'? If you want a long e sound you may have to change it. I have taught an Aneeka and an Aneika. I think Aneka would naturally be said 'a -neck -a'. Is that what you want?

seeker · 15/05/2009 11:11

Think want all the names would sound like applied to a baby, a toddler, a stroppy teenager, a cool 25 year old, a middle aged person,, a grand parent and a very old person in a care home.

For example - if you were the boss, would you like your staff to call you Sonny?

Servalan · 15/05/2009 11:14

Love Lois and Penelope

Like Iris a lot

Aneka - not keen.

None of the boys' names are to my taste - I marginally prefer Ari to the other 2.

KleineMaus · 15/05/2009 11:14

I love Aneka, in fact it's one of my top choices for dc2 if it's a girl, but DH won't allow it (he keeps going on about Anneka Rice, but kids nowadays won't have that association). From your boys names I like Ari best.

missmiss · 15/05/2009 11:27

Iris.

Monty and Sonny are only okay if short for something.

HellHathNoFury · 15/05/2009 11:58

The only one I don't mind is penelope!

But I am also a fan of odd names so I do know what it feels like to choose unusual ones!

HellHathNoFury · 15/05/2009 12:00

Seeker, I see you a lot on these threads, you are always very full of sage, sensible advice!!

docket · 15/05/2009 12:03

I like Lois and Iris. Penelope is okay.

I don't like your boys names, sorry. I agree with Seeker's comments.

ninedragons · 15/05/2009 12:09

I'm not a fan of Ari if there are London accents in the family to consider. I know one and it sounds like 'Arry on the lips of many of their friends.

Sonny isn't a serious name for an adult, in my view.

LittleMissBliss · 15/05/2009 12:18

Not keen on any really sorry. And i like unusual names.

I think my problem is with the girls names is that i can't imagine a baby being called any of them they are grown-up/old lady names to me.

The boys names just aren't to my taste. Good luck though.

seeker · 15/05/2009 12:22

LMB - that's a GOOD thing. She's only going to be a baby for a year! She's going to be an adult for maybe 60 years!

HellhathnoFury - I'll treasure that - it's not what most people say!

wolfear · 15/05/2009 12:34

Seeker - I can see what you are saying about Sonny - don't think I'd take my boss very seriously either.

Monty is definitely my fave, but that would be his full name - not a nn (no dog refs please!

Penelope seems to be pretty popular amongst you all - I don't think I'd like it being shortened to Penny though.

Heated - I like Arty - DH wanted Arthur, but I don't like it - maybe we could come to a compromise.

I want something slightly unusual, but not way out.

Anymore for anymore?

LilRedWG · 15/05/2009 12:35

Arthur on BC and Arty as NN?

peppapig3 · 15/05/2009 12:55

Love Iris and Penelope (I would shorten to Nell which I love too). Lois is nice.
I really like Monty from your boy's list but dislike the other two.

LittleMissBliss · 15/05/2009 13:09

seeker I have the same problem with some names i like but for the opposite reason. That they are cutsie, and more suited to a child so would not work well as an adult.

I think names need to work well through out a persons life.
