Alvie anyone?

We still have ages to go, but we're starting to think about names and are struggling with boys names. We already have an Elliot. DH has decided on Alvie, and although I like the sound of it and the way it combines with Elliot I'm imagining the reactions of family and friends, and also it sounds very close to Alfie, which I liked last time round but not this time.

I'm finding myself oddly drawn to Magnus, which I see is in another thread at the moment (all our girls names are a bit Scandi) and also Evan, but I'm not sure about the alliterative effect of Elliot and Evan. What do you think?

Manus is cool

not sure about Alvie - not heard of it before?

Evan is fine with Elliot IMO

hf128219 · 15/05/2009 09:44

Magnus is nice. What about Fergus?

TsarChasm · 15/05/2009 09:58

You've just reminded me...Alvy was Wooody Allen in Annie Hall. Love that film

Not too keen on Magnus.

TsarChasm · 15/05/2009 09:59

'Woody' even!

ninamag · 15/05/2009 10:02

My nephew is called Elvie.

Alvie conjures up images of algae for me.

Oops. Twice.
I know an Albie, short for Albert. Albert is better than Alvin I think.

LionstarBigPants · 15/05/2009 10:11

There's a Calvin at DD's nursery and it comes off as a really cool name, could have Alvie as a shortening?

Heated · 15/05/2009 10:13

Magnus is fabulous. Think that fits very well with Elliot.

Re Alvie, not keen on many '-ie' boys' names, probably because a lot of girl's names have that feminised ending, and i hope i'm not causing offence, whilst I think Elliot is strong & distinctive, Alvie in comparison is a bit wishy-washy, I think it's the 'v' sound in the name actually that makes it so. What do you think to Albie?

Evan is ntmt probably because I can still remember the seminal documentary 'The trouble with Evan'.

But Magnus is divine!

KleineMaus · 15/05/2009 11:18

Elvie, hadn't thought of that. What was the family/friend reaction to that name ninamag?

Quite like Albie too. Really liking the response to Magnus though, to the extent that I'm now really hoping it's another boy so that I can use it, although half an hour ago I was really hoping it'd be a girl so I could call her Astrid. Having 20 week scan next week, but they're real spoil-sports in this neck of the woods and won't tell you the sex, so it won't help me much.

Also, Hi Ruby - you're on the due in October thread too aren't you. How are you getting on with names?

Alvar is a Swedish boys' name.

I'm a huge fan of Magnus (but have been overruled).

rubyslippers · 15/05/2009 15:17

yes we are indeed KM - was going to out myself and then didn't

we are weighing a few names up ... nothing decided yet

wigglybeezer · 15/05/2009 15:35

did you realise that Alvie is a Scottish place name? (nice place mind you).
I like Magnus, cute for a small boy but also manly for a grown-up.

Wallace · 15/05/2009 15:56

That is what I came to say, wigglybeezer(about the place name).

I say if you like it, use it. I do prefert Albie though

malenagrrl · 15/05/2009 15:59

Magnus is a great choice but if you want him to have a nickname, what would it be?

Greensneeze · 15/05/2009 16:00

I knew a Portugese child called Alvaro

JoPie · 15/05/2009 22:16

Alvie (or Ailbhe) is an Irish girls name, not uncommon.
Like Evan though (Evan Dando, yummy!)

ninamag · 17/05/2009 00:06

Family reaction was good, Elvie is 9 now and has had no problems with school, friends or family. It actually really suits him. I am not allowed to pass comment on any strange names as my eldest daughter is called Merlyn. Good luck!

I love Evan (Actually I do love Evan, he is my DS1)
