Girls names - what could they be short for?

I'm still playing so much with names.

do they need to be short for something?

smallchange · 13/05/2009 22:05

Is Rudy not a boy's name? (Rudolph presumably). Erm, Gertrude?

mel1981 · 13/05/2009 22:06

molly- melissa?
no idea for rudy

dizzydixies · 13/05/2009 22:08

I know of a female Rudy and considered it for DD3 but just on its own

is Molly not short for Margaret?

PeppermintPatty · 13/05/2009 22:08

I'm not sure they're short for anything.

I thought Rudy was a boys name too, but there was a female bird on 3rd and Bird called Rudy so maybe it's a girls name too.

Hulababy · 13/05/2009 22:09

I think Molly is a pet form of Mary.

In Milly Molly Mandy stories Molly is short for Margaret.

My DD is Mollie, not short for anything!

annasmami · 13/05/2009 22:15

Rudy is short for Rudolf (in German, anyway)

annasmami · 13/05/2009 22:16

Rudy is short for Rudolf (in German, anyway)

Hulababy · 13/05/2009 22:19

Google results suggest Rudy is a boy's name, short for Rudolf. The feminine version is Rudi.

WinkyWinkola · 13/05/2009 22:41

Wasn't there a little girl called Rudy in The Cosby Show?

It could be unisex.

My other DCs have got long names that get shortened. Right now I can only think of shortened names that I really like i.e. Molly and Rudy.

I like Betty too but don't like Elizabeth much.

do you want suggestions to go with your other DC? I like both Molly and Rudy but I can't think of anything they can be short for sorry!

lunamoon2 · 13/05/2009 23:13

Molly was originally short for Mary but is now a stand alone name.
Rudy is a boys name(originally short for Ruldolf) but can also stand alone too.

tummytickler · 14/05/2009 14:56

I used to go to school with a Betony who we called Betty. Do you prefer that to Elizabeth?

I know a little girl called Rudi. Just Rudi.

pointydog · 14/05/2009 18:11

Rudy is a boy's name. But I suppose nowadays any old boy's name can be turned into a girl's name.

MrsMattie · 14/05/2009 19:06

I thought Rudi was some sort of Sandinavian / Germanic girl's name...?

What about Rudy in the Cosby Show?

dizzydixies · 14/05/2009 19:10

does it really matter if its more commonly used for a boy if she likes it?

jkklpu · 14/05/2009 20:15

Molly is from Mary
Rudi is from German Rudiger, equivalent of Roger

wolfear · 14/05/2009 20:34

Rduy can be short for Rudolf and Rudyard. My DS is called Rudy - it's his full name, not short for anything.

pointydog · 14/05/2009 21:52

I'm waiting for the first boy called Mary. Or Cindy-loo. Waiting for boys to proudly claim all the girls' names

Hulababy · 14/05/2009 22:21

Mary has been/is used as a middle name for boys in Ireland I believe. DH has certainly come across it when taking details for his law work.

pointydog · 14/05/2009 22:29

ho ho! Well I never

violethill · 17/05/2009 11:06

Molly is a nn for Mary, though some people use it as a name in its own right.

Rudy is a boy's name I think, short for Rudolph (eugh)
