Euphemia - I love it, it is on our list at the moment.
Also could be used for Ethel, which i have also been thinking about a lot lately and i am liking more and more.

littlelamb · 12/05/2009 22:49

I know an Effie short for Elizabeth.

wotulookinat · 12/05/2009 22:57

Euphemia???!!! Sounds like a disease to me.

LastOrders · 12/05/2009 23:00

Elizabeth.

I love the nickname Effie.

My Granny was called Euphemia, her nn was Etta; I knew another Euphemia who was always called Fay. I don't like the name Euphemia myself particularly, whether said out loud or written down, but I love the nicknames!

Nora

mum23monkeys · 13/05/2009 10:04

It's also a gallic name in its own right. In Scotland it's spelled Aoiffe but pronounced Effie.

Umlellala · 13/05/2009 10:14

My dd is Aphra and friends call her Affie (we just call her Aph).

EffieGadsby · 13/05/2009 10:30

My Effie is merely a feminisation of Ephraim, but it seems Euphemia is the norm. Mum23monkeys, that's very interesting that Aoiffe is pronounced 'Effie' in Scotland; in my silly sassanach way, I had pronounced Aoiffe a bit like 'Eva' (but with 'f' rather than 'v' noises). Am very pleased to have learned better.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 13/05/2009 10:52

I always thought Aioffe was pronunced A-off-e. Though I've never met anyone with that name.

My Great Aunt was an Effie but I have no idea what her proper name was. We nearly called DD Effie.

VeryAnnieMary · 13/05/2009 12:42

Could you use Evelina? (great novel)

VeryAnnieMary · 13/05/2009 12:43

Or a full name F- E-? Felicity Emma or somesuch? (clearly cannot think of names beginning with F)

Nyx · 13/05/2009 13:51

LOL @ VeryAnnieMary - I never thought of that, and my own initials are LC, resulting in the nickname Elsie when I was at school. I didn't like it then but don't mind it now - typically, nobody would think of calling me that now.

Bathsheba · 13/05/2009 17:01

My best friend as a teenages we always called Effie or Ef by me - her name was Jennifer...

dizzydixies · 13/05/2009 17:05

I know a woman who has a DD called Stephanie known as Effie

macmam · 13/05/2009 17:08

Aoife isn't the gaelic of Effie--Oighrig is. Aoife is an Irish name some people use for Eva....Have an Auntie Oighrig/Effie (Euphemia). She hates it.

monkeycat · 14/05/2009 09:41

My Gran was called Euphemia - she was known as Famie , which I really like .

This was on my list for DD but DH hated it !

At my Gran's funeral the minister kept referring to her as Effie - oops .

thelollipoplady · 14/05/2009 09:58

Ophelia (effie-lia)
