rubyslippers · 07/05/2009 11:09

not for me

Bucharest · 07/05/2009 11:15

Well, it's a boy's name for starters, and I believe a nickname for Nikolei.

chequersmate · 07/05/2009 11:17

I'm not a fan.

Have heard it used as a girls name though.

boodleboot · 07/05/2009 11:21

i think its unisex - there was a film about an assassin called Nikita - she was a girl...

not keen

but def a girls name IMO

MrsMattie · 07/05/2009 13:17

Elton John.

KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 13:20

I love it but it is the name of the trained assassin on the telly - which is the first thing I would think of if I heard it. Mind you she is rather beautiful IMO!

Bucharest · 07/05/2009 13:21

I'll take Elton John and raise you a Kruschchev.....

I love it

singersgirl · 07/05/2009 16:04

It's a Russian boy's name. There is a boy in DS1's class called this.

paranoidmother · 07/05/2009 16:04

Wasn't it in an ABBA song as well or am I thinking of something else?

CoteDAzur · 07/05/2009 16:13

Nikita is boy's name. It's Russian.

Elton John had a song named "Nikita" where he talks about his love in Russia. This was before he had outed his sexual orientation so some people in the west assumed (wrongly) that it was a girl's name.

KAEKAE · 07/05/2009 16:17

Nah...can't stand it. Not my cup of tea at all.

Bucharest · 07/05/2009 16:19

ParanoidMother- that'll be Chiquitita?

Greensneeze · 07/05/2009 16:21

I know two female little Nikitas

I hjave to say it wouldn't be my first choice

KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 16:42

A lot of Russian boys names are used as girls names in the west, Sacha for example.

Greensneeze · 07/05/2009 16:43

I love Sacha for a boy. I know a little Ukrainian one, although they spell it Sasha.

I'm not so keen on Sasha for a girl.

KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 16:45

I like it for both - both spellings as well - but I am odd

CoteDAzur · 07/05/2009 16:53

"A lot of"? Like which other name, apart from Nikita and Sasha, are used as girls' names in the west?

Nikita and Sasha are both shortened forms of other names, by the way: Nikita is nn for Nicholas and Sasha is nn for Alexander. Like Alexander Litvinenko, the guy poisoned in London in 2006. His wife referred to him as "Sasha".

TabithaTwitchet · 07/05/2009 16:55

I love it as a boy's name. Hate it for a girl.

Greensneeze · 07/05/2009 16:56

The Sasha I know is Aleksandr on paper

BunnyLebowski · 07/05/2009 17:02

It's very 1980's and naff imo. On a girl that is.

If I met a wee Russian boy called I would love it.

Also love Sacha for a boy. Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber have one! (his mother is Ukranian I think)

cestlavie · 07/05/2009 17:04

I'd go with it just because the film "Nikita" is such a fantastic film and Anne Parillaud is staggeringly cool. And yes, it obviously belongs to a girl in the film.

Interestingly, apart from it's Russian origins, having a quick look on the net it seems it also has Greek feminine origins so is genuinely unisex.

seeker · 07/05/2009 17:09

What's wrong with Nicola? Nikita is a little child's name - not an adult's. You said in your post "little girl"- don't forget she'll grow up!

KingCanuteIAm · 07/05/2009 17:13

Yes, fair point Cote - I can't think of any more either, I was pretty sure there are others from memory but as I can't remember what they are it is probably a figment of my imagination!
