So I like the name Maria... but I'm not sure I'd land it on a London baby... do you think it's a classic cross-cultural option, or a middle aged overused no-no?

Thanks!

It's a kind of nothing name, iykwim? Or, to quote you, it's a middle aged overused no-no

dancingqueeen · 28/04/2009 23:51

I think it's classic, and beautiful, but then I might be biased as have a great friend with that name

Greensleeves · 28/04/2009 23:54

I love it, I know a very sweet little girl called Maria

and around here it's pretty unusual too, but not outlandish

upagumtree · 29/04/2009 00:05

Beautiful, I love it

Shitemum · 29/04/2009 00:08

'Maria, I just met a girl named Maria, and suddenly that name will never be the same to meeeeeeee!!!!!'

DD2 insists that I sing that to her every night and her name isn't even Maria...

But 80% of the girls and women where I live are called Maria...MªLuz, Mª Jose, Mªdel Mar, Mª Angeles, ...etc.etc.

Although less so, now that people in Spain are allowed to christen their children anything they want...

Plonker · 29/04/2009 00:45

Oh I really like Maria! I think its beautiful.

I love Mia as a nn too

VeryAnnieMary · 29/04/2009 09:31

It's my DH's fave. At first I thought it sounded a bit Catholic (we're not) but now I think it's pretty - and as Greensleeves says, classic, unusual but not outlandish. I also like Mary for the same reason. Quite like Marie too (cos it's the name/of his latest flame).

(Hmm - now that's an earworm that's sticking this morning)

MrsMattie · 29/04/2009 09:34

It's my favourite girl's name in the whole wide world ever .

I wanted to call my DD Maria, but DH really, really disliked it, so sadly I gave up on it.

Mimi and Mia are cute nicknames if you need to shorten it at all. It's so lovely on it's own, though.

Think of the song 'Maria' from West Side Story:

'Say it loud and there's music playing...
Say it soft and it's almost like praying....'

My sentiments exactly.

nappyaddict · 29/04/2009 09:40

I love it especially with the nn Mimi.

KingRolo · 29/04/2009 09:46

Like it. Do you know the Blondie song?

'She moves like she don't care.
Smooth as silk, cool as air.
Ooh, it makes you wanna cry.

She doesnt know your name and your heart beats like a subway train.
Ooh, it makes you wanna die.

Ooh, dont you wanna take her?
Wanna make her all your own?

Maria.
Youve gotta see her!
Go insane and out of your mind.
Medina.
Ave maria.
A million and one candlelights.'

KingRolo · 29/04/2009 09:47

Sorry for lack of apostrophes, that's what happens when you cut and paste.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 29/04/2009 09:47

it is beautiful. I always loved Eva-Maria as well.

sockmonster · 29/04/2009 09:56

Ah I won't cross it off my list yet then, thanks for thoughts! I also liked Marisa (sp?) but don't think it's as classic and is a bit OC?

Marisa is nice, too.

I know Spanish girl called Maria-Louisa, who's nn is Marisa.

The other Marisa I know is Italian.
