Which spelling do you prefer Xavier or Zavier? If Xavier, do you prefer it pronounced ECKS-AY-VEE-ER or ZAY-VEE-ER?

Xavier pronounced Zay-vee-er.

FrankMustard · 27/04/2009 14:33

Xavier

BonsoirAnna · 27/04/2009 14:34

Xavier is not pronounced Havier ever. Javier is pronounced Havier.

Xavier should be pronounced cks-a-viay.

MaryBS · 27/04/2009 14:36

Xavier, pronounced zavi-ay.

LittleOtik · 27/04/2009 14:42

MrsTittleMouse · 27/04/2009 14:44

RachieB · 27/04/2009 14:58

Galava · 27/04/2009 15:01

I'm not sure I know how to do 'cks' ?!

TheShipsCat · 27/04/2009 15:14

Its my brother's name and we've always said Zay-vee-yer. It's the French version of the Spanish name Javier.

It says this on wikipedia:

People unfamiliar with the form Xavier, when faced with reading it, have sometimes resorted to pronouncing it "ex-avier", though one would have expected its pronunciation as one would pronounce the word "xylophone" to have offered a more reasonable solution. This has resulted in some popular fictional Xaviers getting saddled with the "Ex-avier" pronunciation, as with Charles Xavier, leader of the fictional X-Men.

branflake81 · 27/04/2009 16:51

I would pronounce it Zav-ee-ay

Sorrento · 28/04/2009 10:08

My Cat is called Xavier because my husband wouldn't allow it for a child I love the name and he is a very handsom cat.

AnarchyAunt · 28/04/2009 10:11

I know a little Xavier pronounced Zavi-ay (sort of) and Xav for short. I quite like it.

sockmonster · 28/04/2009 15:51

Javier. Pronounce it the Spanish way Havi-ay. People will say ex-aviour otherwise with Xavier (cringe) but Xavier (pronounced as above with a z sound and a french accent)has much more edge than Zavier.

BonsoirAnna · 28/04/2009 17:57

Except that the Spanish way is not Havi-ay but Havierrr
