Patrick or Guy?

Hi - we are expecting another boy in October. We already have a William which I really regret. He gets called Billy & Will, neither of which I am mad on. Our favourite name was Patrick but parents hated it, hence William. Now wondering to go back to it or to go for Guy which I love because it cannot be shortened! Help?

Guy is better, unless you like Pat? Not too sure about (what a) Guy though...sorry.

Weegiemum · 26/04/2009 20:48

No, I like Patrick SO much more than Guy!

compo · 26/04/2009 20:48

Don;t like Guy at akll

HarryB · 26/04/2009 20:54

Patrick will always be shortened to Paddy or Pat, so I prefer Guy.

yomellamoHelly · 26/04/2009 20:55

We have a Guy. Haven't met another. Love it's simplicity.

Cies · 26/04/2009 20:56

I prefer Patrick but Guy is nice too.

Nighbynight · 26/04/2009 20:59

I know a very cool Guy.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 26/04/2009 21:02

Don't like Guy as a name. To me, it seems like being called Bloke or Chap. Sorry to all parents of Guys.

JustKeepSwimming · 26/04/2009 21:04

Love Patrick.

(have a brother called Patrick, he gets called:
Paddy
Pat

Last one by us lot! )

If you must choose one, Patrick.

VinegarTitsThePorker · 26/04/2009 21:38

Guy is poncey

jellybeans · 26/04/2009 22:01

Patrick.

pranma · 27/04/2009 10:47

My ds is Guy certainly not poncey[I would say that]

hateshopping · 27/04/2009 12:34

Patrick is nice but don't like Pat as a nickname. Might be a Ricky?

dearprudence · 27/04/2009 12:42

Patrick, Paddy and Patch are nice.

Guy sounds like a 1980s media type in red glasses.

SarahL2 · 27/04/2009 12:47

My DH is Patrick.

Family all call him Patrick, his mates call him Pat and his neices and nephews call him Uncle Paddy. Had never heard of Patch as a nickname for Patrick's before but I like that too.

'Tis also my DS's middle name. Partly cause of Daddy and partly cause he was born on St Patrick's Day

I'm with madbad - Guy sounds like a description rather than a name IMO.

PheasantPlucker · 27/04/2009 12:50

I love the name Patrick

seeker · 27/04/2009 12:51

I have a Patrick. I expected it to be shortened, but it very rarely is - except to Patch in the family, and PJ sometimes with his friends. His extended Irish family call him Little Pat - he was named after his late granddad who was Big Pat. But he is almost always Patrick at school and football club and Beavers and so on.

For what it's worth, he's 8 now and we've never met another child with the name. And we have never had anything but positive comments about it.
