Lily or Lillian?

is lillian any more acceptable than lily or lilly? i love lily, but can't get over my fear of diminutives as proper names. im only 20 wks and find out monday if im having boy or girl. also, i used to have a cat named lily, but she ran away. im not against former pet names entirely, but idk how dh will feel. one of many many names under consideration, but this one is a secret favorite.

I know a Lillian and love it.

Colinfirth · 25/04/2009 08:39

There are stacks of Lilies at the moment. If you don't mind that, it's a nice name, not a diminutive.

savoycabbage · 25/04/2009 08:48

I like Lilith.

belgo · 25/04/2009 08:50

You can have Lily as a nickname for Elisabeth. That's far nicer then both Lilian and Lilith.

Shila82 · 30/04/2009 11:59

I like LiLi baby name however

Karam · 30/04/2009 12:06

Agree with Belgo. I also find 'nicknames' as full names a bit naff, so I would have a birth certificate name. Elizabeth is beautiful and classice name, easily shortens to Lily too. Not so keen on Lilian though. HTH

Greensleeves · 30/04/2009 12:06

Lily isn't a diminutive, it's a flower!

sockmonster · 30/04/2009 12:13

Liliana, call her Lili or Lily. It's beautiful.

Personally though, although I like the pretty L sounds and the cutesyness, lilies kind of make me think of death but that's just my inner pessimist.

I think Lily on its own is good if you have a wacky or long surname, otherwise make the name more complete and shorten it.

sockmonster · 30/04/2009 12:15

Though as above I prefer Liliana to Lilian or Lilith, as the latter two seem much more middle-aged to me

PuppyMonkey · 30/04/2009 12:17

Lily isn't a nickname. And even if it was, so what? Tis a million times nicer than Lilian or Lilleth.

lollipopz · 30/04/2009 12:23

Lily is lovely. Lilian reminds me of the scary pimp lady in shameless! sorry

RachieB · 30/04/2009 12:44

What about Lila.

katie3677 · 30/04/2009 18:37

My daughter (5 months) is Liliana, but known as Lily, and sometimes Lila

spenthen · 30/04/2009 18:44

How about Lillet???

livvyanddaisymummy · 30/04/2009 19:56

I love Lily, or Liliana too

Tidey · 30/04/2009 20:00

Lily isn't a shortened version of a name, it's a name in its own right, just like Daisy and Rose aren't short for anything. Wouldn't the 'short for Lillian' version be spelled Lilly?
