Hi Lori
I like Amelia better than Alexandra, it'a a 'prettier' name, still classy and quite individual.
Although I like the shortened version of Alexandra 'Lexy'.
I think (as i'm sure you have) you need to take the surname into consideration and whether either would become a real mouthful. Eventhough Amelia is a shorter name, it sounds long when you say it. I think longer names - especially 3-4 syllable names sound better when teamed with a single syllable surname. God I know this sounds a bit anal but I went into faaaaar too much detail choosing my Dds name, I sent myself mad. I like Amelia it's lovely.

my niece is called amelia and its a lovely name....we shorted it to mills and mia....its still quite unusual and i don't know of any others whereas i know three lexies [which i do not like at all incidently] Lexie makes me think of Alex Curran s daughter....

Alexandra hands down. It's a classic. Alex is a cool nickname, too. Lexie is horrid.

lastboxoftampons · 23/04/2009 11:40

I love them both. Alexandra does have tons of cool nick names, though, if you think you might shorten it. Lots of options for a girl when she's older - Alex, Lexi, Sasha, etc.

belgo · 23/04/2009 11:41

I like both names. Alexandra will be shortened to Alex whether you like it or not.

Wigglesworth · 23/04/2009 11:50

I like both too, Amelia is very pretty, my DH vetoed it though when we were expecting our DS (didn't know the sex at the time), it sounds too similar to his ex's name. I want Alex for a boy though if I have another DS.

Pinkjenny · 23/04/2009 11:52

I prefer Alexandra. I have an Alexa, who often gets nicknamed Lexie, and both suit her personality down to the ground.

branflake81 · 23/04/2009 12:02

Alexandra. Like Alex as a nickname. Lexie is a bit "cheerleadery"

slug · 23/04/2009 12:25

DD is Alexandra. She was Alex for a while, but has settled into Lexi as a shortened version of the name. Mind you, she's still Alexandra when she's being naughty

Kotek · 24/04/2009 10:13

both good - both names have lots of shortenings which is nice.

TwoScrambledEggs · 24/04/2009 13:16

Love Alexandra!

forgot to add - nicknames I have heard for Amelia include Amy, Milly, Mia, Mel, Lia, Mimi, Minnie. Funnily enough, I probably prefer the full name Alexandra over Amelia but prefer all of Amelia's nicknames to Alexandra's nicknames.
