Mary - boring and common, or unusual and cool

So,
Mary - what do you think? Is it dreadfully dull, boring and massively overused or is it timeless, cute and a little bit cool?

Dh loves it - i think it is lovely, but not exactly 'WOW'.

I know a 6 year old and a 4 year old called Mary. It's VERY cute. Simple but pretty. Not common at all.

flightoftheeasterbunyip · 17/04/2009 08:40

Ooh it's my middle name too! Really good name

nannyogg · 17/04/2009 08:44

We considered Mary for DD's name. In the end we used it as her middle name. I really like it.

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 17/04/2009 17:46

Mary Alice IS nice, but I think of Desperate Housewives. BUT......... does that matter....

MaryBS · 17/04/2009 17:51

Oy, less of the common!

PrimulaVeris · 17/04/2009 17:52

Timeless - love it.

Not common at all

LadyOfWaffle · 17/04/2009 17:53

Top of my girls list!

LadyOfWaffle · 17/04/2009 17:53

Even though I do have a Joseph

sleepsforwimps · 17/04/2009 18:26

It was my Grandmothers name and we used it for dd's middle name, so as I used it, it's obviously a very cool name . I don't know any little girl Mary's, so still unusual in my neck of the woods. I think it's a really lovely sounding name.

BabyBaby123 · 17/04/2009 19:00

i like it, but as a middle name

Jenbot · 17/04/2009 21:14

Very unusual these days, but classic. A good mix! I think it's cool.

Leannabanana · 18/04/2009 09:46

Mary Alice is to die for.....will be nicking that for my list for sure.....

RunningGirl · 18/04/2009 14:15

I don't like it. I think it sounds very plain and meh. It's definitely coming back in, at least in some areas, as I know 3, all under 4.

subtlemouse · 18/04/2009 14:28

I don't know about now, but when I were a lass, there were two local families, whose girls were called

Jane
Mary
Anne
Susan

None of these seem to be v popular now (there were 4 Marys and 4 Susans in my class at school, c1971).

So less of the 'grandmother', please - I'm not that old!!!

Ewe · 18/04/2009 14:31

I think it is cute but I don't think it is as unusual as you think, I know of two under one and one who is 3.

bigted · 18/04/2009 14:36

BEAUTIFUL name. If my last baby had been a girl I would have used that name

lunamoon2 · 18/04/2009 17:06

I wouldn't call it common, definaetly not, but it just doesn't do it for me.

One of my flower girls was called Mary. She's 11 now. I still can't really warm to it, though it suits her.

seeker · 18/04/2009 20:47

Absolutely lovely. Go for it.

cory · 18/04/2009 22:01

Not my favourite for some reason, but looking at it objectively I can see absolutely nothing wrong with it: not common enough to be boring, not unusual enough to be odd, it's certainly a classic. If you like it, then go for it!

And agree with Flibberty- timing seems about right.

Technofairy - her sisters would be Iris and Pearl so maybe would feel cheated on the same way as your gran - hmmm. Thanks - that was a very helpful comment - gives me some food for thought.
