Can you name a child after a family member who is living?

Hi, I really love my half sisters name. It's Briony. I'd love to use that name if I had another little girl.
What do you think? Is it strange, will she find it strange?
I also like the names Matilda and Tallis.

my dds middle name is Jodie, after my youngest sister

I gave my dd1 the middle name of my best mate and her godmother. She was touched and my little girl loves it. I would love it if one of my nieces or nephews was named after me - what an honour. Do it!!
