Mimi Rose or Ruby Ava?...

we've managed to narrow our DD's name down to two firm options, but are struggling to choose one over the other.

we really like the Ruby option, but are worried that it's a bit too common (live in NW London). i also love the Mimi option, but we've had some negative feedback about it, which is bothering the DH - something to do with Elle McPherson's sister and a sex tape!!!

please help!

Muh prefer Runy to Mimi; have to say not keen on Mimi at all.

morethanyoubargainfor · 08/04/2009 16:47

i prefer Ruby Ava, i don't like mimi rose, (but i know a dog with that name who is NOT nice!) so that might be why.

kitsmummy · 08/04/2009 16:48

mimi rose, v cool and beautiful

iSOLOvechocolate · 08/04/2009 16:49

Ava Rose

Nancy66 · 08/04/2009 17:05

Not too keen on Mimi as a stand alone name, fine as a nickname. So would go with Ruby - although, as you said, very common.

EffieGadsby · 08/04/2009 17:11

Ruby Ava is my preference, although, as you say, it's pretty common; the second most used baby name (for 2007 anyway - I'm not sure the ONS have published the 2008 names). However, if you can live with her being one of many babies with her name, then I'd go for it.

FSB · 08/04/2009 17:15

it's tricky!!

Effie/Nancy, it seems Ruby isn't as common as it used to be, there are only 5 on the 2008 ONS list, i'd have thought it would be in the double digits.

Rose is THE most overused middle name though - literally 100s

it's not easy, this baby naming business...

I like Mimi, but only as a nickname - either Miranda or Amelia good imo.

Don't like Ruby so much - when I lived in NW London there seemed to be loads around.

piscesmoon · 08/04/2009 17:29

I would have Rose as the first name and choose something else for the second name-I dislike Ruby, Ava and particularly Mimi.
If you are keen on Mimi I would call her that for short and give her a nice name that it could be shortened from.

hotcrosspurepurple · 08/04/2009 17:32

don't like either of your choices, sorry
Why do people insist on picking names that sound like baby names
these babies will grow into fully grown women, and Mimi sounds too much like a high class call girl

Mimi Rose sounds like a polite name for your lady bits

mollykitten · 08/04/2009 17:40

I like Ruby Rose......but sounds a bit like a lipstick shade! Sorry!

Pinner35 · 08/04/2009 17:41

My boss is called Mimi (it means "small" in Chinese apparently) and she is certainly not a high class call girl. I think it's a very unusual name and much prefer it to Ruby.

QOD · 08/04/2009 17:42

mimi - Ruby AVa is so 2008 LOL

hedgiemum · 08/04/2009 17:52

I love Mimi - would have gone for it for dd2 had we not called dd1 Gigi - would have sounded like pet poodles when we called them in the park!

I like Mimi short for virtually any M name, or just on its own, much more than Ruby. I know loads of Ruby's.

nappyaddict · 13/04/2009 00:31

See I love Mimi and Ava but not keen on Ruby or Rose as I think both or overused atm.

frazzledoldbag · 13/04/2009 12:01

Nigella Lawsons DD is Cosima but shortened to Mimi. I like it.
Ruby is getting extremely popular now - depends on whether you are bothered about that?

jkklpu · 13/04/2009 12:06

They are all v popular names at the moment in London, but that isn't necessarily bad if you like the names. I know an Imogen whose nickname is Mimi.

Cies · 13/04/2009 12:09

TBH I see Mimi as a nickname. It's hard to imagine a lawyer or engineer called Mimi.

Ruby Ava is ok - very 2009 but there's nothing wrong with that per se.

FSB · 14/04/2009 15:19

Frazzle, we were originally looking at Cosima shortened to Mimi, but DH's surname is a noun, so she would get the "Coz I'm a..." at school

shame, because I absolutely loved it, but am not ready to give up on Mimi entirely.

any suggestions for middle names to go with Mimi? i agree that Rose is a bit done to death, but it seems to fit...

thanks

Ava Rose

noddyholder · 14/04/2009 15:25

Mimi louise

pointydog · 14/04/2009 15:28

Ruby Ava. Def. Mimi makes me think sex industry of granny.

pointydog · 14/04/2009 15:28

or granny. Lordy

jellybeans · 14/04/2009 21:22

Ruby. Mimi just reminds me of her from Shameless.

nappyaddict · 20/04/2009 11:26

Go with Mimi as a nickname but use a longer formal name like Miriam, Marilyn, Mira, Miranda, Marie, Maria, Noemi, Naomi, Camille, Camilla. In fact any name beginning with M can have Mimi as a nickname really.
