I love the name but it would need to be short for something. Can't be Kathryn as that's my name!

Any ideas?

My niece is just called Kitty - not short for anything - as is another little girl I know who is the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen - just 'Kitty' suits her perfectly!

On the whole, though, I agree with you about it needing to be short for something. I suppose Katherine is too close to your own name? That is what it's short for, unfortunately, so you might have to settle for varying the spelling -

Katherine?
Katharine?
Catherine?

Or even simply 'Kate' as a full name and Kitty as a nickname?

Hello Kitty! Miaou!

sleepsforwimps · 03/04/2009 09:20

Surely anything starting in Kat would be okay to shorten to Kitty?

Katerina
Kathleen

sleepsforwimps · 03/04/2009 09:21

Oh yes Hellokitty great name. Helly or Kitty could be the nn

wilkos · 03/04/2009 09:23

i love Kitty, my grandmas name (short for catherine)

however couldnt have it for dd as i am katherine but known as katie

katie and kitty not great!

so dd is lily instead

pranma · 03/04/2009 09:55

Caitlin or Kathleen or Katrina or Catriona

thell · 03/04/2009 11:14

Or Katerina ?
Love Kitty, fab name.

Perhaps have the Kat name as a middle name, but call her Kitty instead of the first name? It seems to be sone quite a lot these days, although I think surely it's a bit of a palaver.

This was our choice for DS3, but he is a boy . I love it!

I have a kitty, she is mental!

kittywise · 03/04/2009 12:46

btw my kitty is really called Lydia katherine but we just started to called her Kitty, as you do. Perhaps you could use Katherine as a middle name and then call her Kitty?

sweetkitty · 03/04/2009 12:47

I love it I would probably have Katherine nn Kitty.

Also love Kate and Katie

Mung · 03/04/2009 12:47

Why not just Kitty? I never understand why it needs to be short for something. If you feel that the name doesn't suit an older person then use a different name.

I think its a lovely name as it is.

KathrynAustin · 03/04/2009 13:34

Thanks for the ideas!

I do think it's a lovely name in itself but I also want my children to chose their own nn when they are older, if that makes sense! So I would like it to be short for something.

It's such a pretty, feminine name, what if she grows up to be a hard core feminist (for example) and the name doesn't suit her/she doesn't like it.

I think I'm thinking too much into this!

Any comments about Katya?

I had an Auntie Kitty, I think it's a lovely name.
Not as keen on Katya.

kitty78 · 03/04/2009 16:08

I'm a Kitty and have always been known as Kitty but I have a "real" name too which is totally unrelated. I love that everyone who cares about me knows me as one name yet I get to have another name for all the serious stuff in life.

kittykat21 · 03/04/2009 16:14

Kitty is a great name, i dont think it needs to be a shortened version of anything. It's what alot of people call me, although its just a nn for me.

sleepyhead3 · 03/04/2009 20:31

Prefer just Kitty too- gorgeous!

oysterpots · 05/04/2009 16:57

I knew a Kitty, short for Karen.

bluebump · 05/04/2009 17:35

I would just have it as Kitty not short for anything else. I love the name, and would have it for a DD if DP would agree but he hates it.

qumquat · 09/04/2009 18:03

I think Katya is beautiful. Although I really don't like Kitty, so I probably don't belong on this thread!

Leannabanana · 09/04/2009 19:28

Kaitlyn....Kitty....
