Do you like it and what would it be shortened to, if anything?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
fryalot · 31/03/2009 21:40

We know a Xavier.

The thing that winds his parents up is when people pronounce it EX-ay-vier rather than Z-A-vier

I haven't heard it shortened though.

pandavark · 31/03/2009 21:41

you could call him zavvi like the shop

seeker · 31/03/2009 21:41

Xav in a Jilly Cooper book.

But it's a bad idea - people won't be able to spell it or pronounce it.

Quattrocento · 31/03/2009 21:43

I think it's lovely

Works better if you are francophones though

I know a couple. It shortens to Zavvi of course

ilovemydogandMrObama · 31/03/2009 21:47

love it.

weebump · 31/03/2009 21:50

Like it. Go for it. But as Quattrocento says, it's better if you're French.

hedgiemum · 31/03/2009 21:55

I know a gorgeous Xavier. Great name!

noonki · 31/03/2009 21:58

lovely.

ABetaDad · 31/03/2009 22:02

Michael Portillo has Xavier as his second name. Anyone remember the infamous night he lost his seat at the election.

The returning officer pronounced it X - avie - er.

Nice name actually. I like it.

NotanOtter · 31/03/2009 22:04

abetadad

I LIKE MP now but at the time i loathed him

returning officer probably felt the same Ex ay vier

ABetaDad · 31/03/2009 22:07

I like him too - in my view he would have made a decent Tory Leader in the wilderness years (and a better PM than Blair).

My wife and he share the same hairdresser.

LetThemEatCake · 31/03/2009 23:36

I LOVE IT

on my list.

Galava · 31/03/2009 23:43

I know a Xavier but he's a Xavi (pronounced Chabby) I remember DS in reception saying there was a boy in his class called Chubby but he wasnt fat really !

I like it.

LetThemEatCake · 31/03/2009 23:46

dh has a prob with it because he says that the abbrev sounds like Chavvy

food for thought I s'pose

SuperBunny · 01/04/2009 01:12

It can be pronounced eX-a-vier though. Or like Javier. My Mexican friends have an Xavier who they call Xavi, pronounced with a long 'a' more like Harvey.

pedalmonster · 02/04/2009 18:35

Dont do it!!!!!!
We have friends who called their DS1 Xavier - they pronounce it Ex- avv - eee- ayyy
they are constantly correcting people - many various pronounciations, zavier, havier, etc
shorten to Zavvi but - without being racist - that sounds very Jewish. Actually my friends are Jewish which maybe is starting to all make sense...

JeMenFous · 02/04/2009 18:37

If you are French, oui

If you are not French, non

Xavielli · 02/04/2009 21:40

I have a Xavier! (He is half greek)

We pronounce it Zah-VEE-er

He is known as Xavi/Zavvi.

nappyaddict · 15/04/2009 13:51

I like it especially shortened to Xavi.

claireybeeinmyeasterbonnet · 15/04/2009 13:58

I love it, ds was going to be Xavier until he was born and it just wasn't right somehow . If we'd shortened it we probably would have used Xavi

Pinkjenny · 15/04/2009 13:59

I used to go out with a Xavier. Zay-Vee-Er

Like it. Not him, unfortunately, though.

pointydog · 15/04/2009 14:05

not my cup of tea
