Do you struggle when you see your DCs names in this topic and when people say they don't like it do you feel a bit angry?

Or am I just mad???

I don't mind if they say "It's not my cup of tea" but when they say "It's poncey" or "it's chavey". I recently saw someone say that my DS1's name was "stuffy" I almost feel like I should defend my boys names.

I think I might stay away from here in future.

ds' name is not popular, i was somewhat surprised when i first came across the unpopularity on mn.

dd2's name popular, well liked by some of course, never all.

dd3 name, not really mentioned, strangely, there are 3 in her gymnastics class!

"what sort of name is that" comment...........so I set them straight and told them it was a very normal name thank you very much, it just so happens it's not a English name

I find those comments really annoying. As if people living in England should only name their children Susan and George. (Nothing wrong with Susan and George, btw!)

FWIW, I've quite liked it when people say they don't get or don't like names I've posted for comment - it means my kids won't have to share their names with dozens of others

"I just assume they must have no taste. Especially when I see the names they do like"

LOL - yes, indeed!

I think my dd2's name is more popular on MN than in real life (Mabel), but I still see people on these threads slating it. I don't mind, they don't know MY Mabel, so I don't care

My daughters name has been described as posh and horsey.

My sons name was branded mean, sneaky and weak.

He is only 15days old so no, I didn't let it affect my decision! :O

Were you on that thread with your lightning-fast namechanging reflexes? I suspected lapin at the time, who also had form on that score.

I believe there may have been a North/South misunderstanding vis a vis it not actually being a made up weirdy name. Sometimes it's quite hard on the phone to convince people it's not a made up name, to be fair.

Anyhoo.

My DCs names always come up as boring-I don't mind in the least-I love boring names!

Report
seeker · 28/03/2009 22:41

I'm always puzzled by this. Do people really, on being introduced to a grown up called - for example, James, - think "Oh what a boring name!"?

Report
glucose · 28/03/2009 22:42

According to the good and wise MN my dd's name is too childish for when she is a grown up (words to that effect) something like 'how many hot shot lawyers do you know called - -'
okey dokey

I am profoundly grateful to have a 'boring' name-much better than having one that dates you, is embarrassing, you have to spell or explain everytime.

Is her name Honey by any chance glucose?

I really can't wait to get up the duff again and start my own (real) baby names thread. I am going to come up with the most poncetastic names I can think of. Am getting quite keen on St John....

My ds1's name is mentioned on most awful/ponciest names to call your kids. I'm past caring now, but it did hurt a bit at first.

Dd's name is loved by a selct few, but they would all spell it the Gaelic way.

Ds2's name is becoming quite common in England, but I don't know any in Scotland. It is quite often mentioned as a nice name.

There was once a thread about how my own name conjured up images of a bitter, boring, old bag with grey hair in a bun!

I used to get sensitive about MN comments on DC names, but now I just find it amusing. Not least because I've been around a long time.

For instance, DS2 name has changed in MN circles. It used to be labeled ridiculously ponce, then it became horribly chav, recently it got lots of 'lovely' accolades.

Offhand, The only MN baby-name bias that gets very up my nose is the automatic prejudice against 'made up' names. All names were originally 'made up'. Unless it sounds ugly or means something obviously bad (like "Gritter" for a girl, or "Chlamydia" for anybody), I don't think people should be so closed-minded.

I haven't heard my dc names come up really! but not sure if I would be narked if people were saying mean things about them as it wouldn't be personal... although I wouldn't want to think that I have chosen unwisely

I too say... ohh I don't like that name... but wouldn't ever slate them!

piscesmoon · 29/03/2009 08:58

I like the freedom to say exactly what I think! I hate made up mames and can say so-in RL I have to be diplomatic. If you like it, that is all that matters-people shouldn't start threads if they are in the least sensitive.

Still stung by the prolific poster who described dd2's name as sounding like a boat. Everytime I see her posts I think "witch" . Whereas posters that said it was gorgeous hold a special place in my heart.

I was so pleased to see a thread about my daughter's name the other day as I have never seen one before - until someone said it sounded like a brand of sanitary wear
