Do you struggle when you see your DCs names in this topic and when people say they don't like it do you feel a bit angry?

Or am I just mad???

I don't mind if they say "It's not my cup of tea" but when they say "It's poncey" or "it's chavey". I recently saw someone say that my DS1's name was "stuffy" I almost feel like I should defend my boys names.

I think I might stay away from here in future.

no lovely south sea island I'm afraid - they're all Zimbabwean names.

But my god we had trouble coming up with DS3's name (we'd accidentally ended up with 2 "T"'s = ie it wasn't a concious decision to have their names starting with the same letter), and felt if we had another boy we couldn't really leave him out. We wanted to avoid any "family" connections with any of the names and virtually all of DH's family have children's names beginning with it LOL.

Babbity · 27/03/2009 19:03

Mine are boring, old fashioned, and "dad names" that "sound weird on a baby". And it's half the reason we chose them; we wanted traditional but we also wanted uncommon.

I like it because normally when people say they don't like dds names, I don't like any of the names they are mentioning and I feel smug like I have the best names and they've got no taste!

FAQinglovely · 27/03/2009 19:12

Jajas - you must have been there about a year before me then - I went on a Gap "Year" in Sept 1997, and didn't return to the UK until April 200 - complete with husband bun in oven

Went back again in 2006 to visit friends and DH's family - was so sad to see how bad it had got

My daughter's called Tabitha. According to MN, I think I was really supposed to have a kitten.

FannyJo · 27/03/2009 19:38

I quite like it when people say they dont like my DCs names. It means they arent run of the mill, dull names!

Doesn't bother me at all.

My son's name is almost always described as gorgeous on here. My DD's name is frequently referred to as 'not a proper name'.

Whatever.

FAQinglovely · 27/03/2009 19:47

the time I was actually living there I saw it go from something amazing with a feeling of a great future, to the chaos that surrounded the 2000 presidential elections.

Just before we actually left Zim (in 2000) we bought a newspaper to take with us and keep - because the headline was so incredibly shocking and (relatively) unheard of before - a white farmer that had been murdered, little did we know that was only the beginning.

seeker · 27/03/2009 19:49

When we called our dd Grace everybody said 9or thought!) how wacky and off the wall a name it was. My mother in law was so worried she rang my mother to see if she could persuade me to change my mind. That was 13 years ago. Now.......!

ProfYaffle · 27/03/2009 19:49

My dds names appear on here every now and then, but seem to feature equally on 'names we love' and 'names we hate' type threads so I don't really mind. Probably means I've got it about right imho

FAQinglovely · 27/03/2009 19:51

Grace is lovely - I met a family in Zim (with grown up children) who were Faith, Grace, Hope, Charity and Gift (Gift was the only boy).

Tillyscoutsmum · 27/03/2009 19:51

Apparently my dd's name is ridiculously popular and "fashionable" (not in a good way). I've not met another one yet though and she was named after my Grandma so it must have been fashionable 80+ years ago as well

weepootle · 27/03/2009 19:52

MrsMattie, I always thought you must be the mum of a Matilda- I assume I'm wrong then.

rubyslippers · 27/03/2009 19:54

doesn't bother me

DS;s name is varying described as "chavvy", "common" and "silly surname as first name" and it is also unisex

however, i LOVE it

BeehiveBaby · 27/03/2009 19:56

My DDs names are always being recommended on here....drives me potty which is really silly!

MrsGokWan · 27/03/2009 20:29

I sometimes see DC1&2'S names pop up on here. DC1's usually gets, that's a dogs' name. DC2's usually gets that's a nice name.

I have never seen DC3's name come up on here. It is very unusual and can be for a boy or a girl. I have only known 4 people called it ever, 3 on the TV and a re fictional characters and 1 is a great, great grandparent.

jellybeans · 27/03/2009 20:35

Doesn't bother me

AitchTwoOh · 27/03/2009 20:35

i once saw dd1's name referred to on here as 'so boring', i was surprised by how much it hurt actually. (of course i later found out that it was an in-joke and in fact her dd is the same name [hmm).
nevertheless, it was a good lesson. it stung, so if i don't like a name (unless it's just abusive) i don't comment.

btw i LOVE wolf.

Chatkins · 27/03/2009 20:39

My dds names have been described as lovely but far too popular on here - and I do wish they were not so popluar now !
