Elsie?? Old woman's name or pretty name?

Just thought I'd ask opinions on this.
I heard that James Morrison has named his little girl Elsie and I was thinking if you actually disassiociate it with being an old woman's name it is a really pretty name.
15/16 years ago when my sister was named Grace there was a lot of comments on the lines of 'oh that's ermmm...an unusual name these days' and now it's one of the most popular girls names.
Is Elsie making a come back or would I be subjecting my daughter to a life time of cruel old biddy comments?

Ugly old woman's name.

QueeniePretz · 10/05/2011 22:18

I'm 13 and my name is Elsie. I like it, it suits me and I think I pull it of quite well. I know 4 other Elsies ones 3 one 4 and 9 and the other 10. I thinks it's quite a popular name nowadays, or in England anyway.

Its getting more popular, I know of several Elsies.
However, whilst my own DD has an 'old' name, I just can't warm to Elsie (sorry to the Elsies on the thread!)

happyinherts · 10/05/2011 22:22

It's becoming popular again. 17 year old of my acquaintance has just named her newborn it, and quite frankly I was surprised.

MelinaM · 10/05/2011 22:24

It was my great aunt's name, her mother choose it as it picked out some of the letters of Elisabeth -her own nameSmile I like it, it's definitely not ugly!

Gladys, now there's an ugly name!!!

usualsuspect · 10/05/2011 22:26

Its an old ladies name

Planetofthegrapes · 11/05/2011 03:00
  1. For my generation, (60s child) it's an "old ladies" name like Ethel
  1. Its a nickname name.
5DollarShake · 11/05/2011 03:30

I thought it was already popular again.

It's nice enough, but I think there are so many other, nicer names out there - no offence to anyone with the name. :)

P.S. Why on earth would a 13-year old be posting on Mumsnet?! Confused

RugbyWidow7 · 11/05/2011 09:59

Very cute. Would carry her through life well too. I liked it but DH didn't.

rengin · 11/05/2011 13:03

Think its gorgeous, and you are giving me second thoughts on our name now! What would you have a middle name?

AberdeenAngusina · 11/05/2011 19:59

Am I really the only person humming

I used to have a girlfriend known as Elsie
With whom I shared two squalid rooms in Chelsea
She wasn't what you'd call a blushing flower
As a matter of fact she rented by the hour.....

mammyof4 · 25/10/2011 12:16

my 3 year old daughter is called Elsie-leigh but just gets elsie it is a really nice name.

Montsti · 25/10/2011 12:23

It does sound like an older lady's name to me for now, however as a few people have already said so are most of the other currently popular names so I wouldn't worry about that.

mammyof4 · 25/10/2011 12:26

My little girl is called Elsie-leigh and her middle name is alice

oohlaalaa · 25/10/2011 13:37

old woman's name. I really don't like this name. I love Elise though.

Wants3 · 25/10/2011 18:36

I love it ( my mum uses it as her painting name, initials LC) so she would be chuffed if we used it. I also love Mabel so I like old lady chic!

PosiesOfPoison · 25/10/2011 18:38

Love it, although I know two Elsies.

PosiesOfPoison · 25/10/2011 18:39

I have a Mabel!!

Reminds me of Elsie Tanner.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 26/10/2011 22:23

I have to say it does have old lady connotations for me personally, but it is undoubtedly getting more popular.

Objectively it's a nice name, but not to my tastes, as it's a bit girly for me, what with the 'ie' ending. I'd group it in with Milly, Tilly, Ruby, Daisy, Poppy, etc - too frilly and coy for me.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 26/10/2011 22:27

Elsie Tanner

Sorry.

puffylovett · 26/10/2011 22:31

I love it. Old ladies don't spring to mind for me at all. I immediately think of sweet, quiet Elsie from What Katy Did, one of my favourite childhood books :)
