Elsie?? Old woman's name or pretty name?

Just thought I'd ask opinions on this.
I heard that James Morrison has named his little girl Elsie and I was thinking if you actually disassiociate it with being an old woman's name it is a really pretty name.
15/16 years ago when my sister was named Grace there was a lot of comments on the lines of 'oh that's ermmm...an unusual name these days' and now it's one of the most popular girls names.
Is Elsie making a come back or would I be subjecting my daughter to a life time of cruel old biddy comments?

I like old women names so yes I like Elsie. It's lovely in fact.

jellybeans · 23/03/2009 19:04

old lady

Supercherry · 23/03/2009 19:15

What's wrong with old ladies? We'll all be old ladies one day you know. All our names- or at least those with the more popular names- will be old lady names. I don't get the fixation with labelling names into groups and stereotypes. IMO you either like it or you don't.

If I had had a girl, it would have been Elizabeth, it's a lovely name and there are so many ways to shorten it

Ella,
Elsie
Elisa

Lizzie
Beth

I'm really not into old lady names, but I have to say I quite like Elsie! It's sweet and I think would suit a little girl as much as an older one.

ten10 · 24/03/2009 18:15

I wasn't a fan of Elsie, until my neighbour named her daughter Elsie and because she is such a sweetheart I now love the name,

MarchNowFebMum · 24/03/2009 18:27

pretty

BikeRunSki · 24/03/2009 19:33

I love it and wanted Elsa nn Elsie if DS had been a girl. But DH hated it. Elsie is his grandma's name and she has always hated it - to the extent that she has used her middle name all her adult life, and I only knew she was Elsie because we got a cheque from her and she is "E Name Surname" on her chequebook.

mumonthenet · 25/03/2009 21:36

cupidlovelsie · 01/10/2009 09:55

Hey my name is Elsie and im 16, when i was younger i use to hate it and all i wanted was a "normal" name like steph or amy. But when i was about 14 i realized i was lucky to have a unusale name. If you wanna call your kid Elsie and your worried about it sounding like an old lady's name, you should spell it as Elzie, its cooler and no one would think of an old lady when they hear it. Elsie is a pretty name for sure so yer name your kid that.
