Can you help me find a traditional name that no one has used yet????

We are fairly late having our latest DS, and everyone else we know has already had their second, if not third. They have "taken" most of the popular boys names.

I never imagined having more than one son (no idea why) and so have never had more than the one name I was really attached to. So, we've used that for DS1.

I just want a strong traditional name, that has similar impact to first DS, and I want to really like it. As per LittleMissWorryHead's posting, I'm really worried that it will be such a compromise that it will end up being a problem forever...

So the following are off our joint list but sort of the right lines
Dan/iel
Nic/olas
Jo/seph
Ben/
Will/

To give you an idea, a friend has just called their son Felix. I don't think i would have chosen it, but it's a traditional name but not common iyswim......

I'm very worry that at the moment our list has two names on it, and neither of us is super keen on either of them:

Leo
Henry

Am I making any sense at all, is this just too boring for anyone else to bother with??!!

Mumsnetters do tend to favour poncey names.
That said, I would say Henry, Charles and Leo are potentially poncey, too, to my ears.
Surely John, Bruce and Mark are not "poncey", are they??

Kevin has quite a pedigree, but is not poncey either.

Is there something 'wrong' with poncey names?

I really am astonished how some of us regard perfectly classical, timeless names (e.g. Charles, Henry, Quentin, Leo etc) as 'poncey' and comment negatively on them.

Also, lets try to be less insular. Many names that we regard as 'poncy' are very common names in other countries. E.g. Quentin is a very popular/common name in France. And Leo is very common in Germany for example. With an increasingly global world we need to broaden our mind regarding name associations imo.

I respect your POV, SonnieB. There's nothing wrong with (almost!) any name, imho, even if some people regard it as poncey/chav/dorky/whatever.

However, OP did mention that her husband wanted to avoid 'poncey' names -- and frankly, I think there is a tendency for MNers to favour names that many in wider society would regard as 'poncey'.

My DS2 has a name that is frequently deemed ultra chav or ultra poncey on MN, btw! Needless to say DH & I never asked anybody else's opinions about any of our DC names -- and I don't regret that, either.

I think if I wanted a traditional but unusual boys name I'd look at the top 100 from the 1920s, 1940s or whatever period inspires you, then see which of them have declined in popularity or fallen out of use. There's bound to be a hidden gem in a list somewhere.

OK, well, I have to say I'm chuffed to bits that I've been given so much advice, but am GUTTED that DH is now reneging on the very small list we do have (including Leo).

I entirely agree that "poncey" is an unhelpful expression, but it was how DH explained most of the ones he didn't want. This is the man who, with first DS had me posting because his idea for girls names included tracy and sharon. I know, lots of adults have names like that (some of my best friends lol!!).. but how many of you use them now?

Oh, and my favourite example so far, of DH and I being on different planets, is that I think of Rory is upper class, posh, but like it a lot, DH says it makes him think of American trailer park scenario......?? WTF??

What names does your DH like, he must have his own list of what he likes if you weren't bothered?
