I love the name Agnes, but is it too old-fashioned and fusty? Will it cause ridicule in the playground?

It does seem quite old fashioned but I quite like it personally.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 11/03/2009 17:57

Since you're asking folks - I don't like it. But that's only my opinion and it really doesn't matter what I think . If YOU like it, use it!

hedgiemum · 11/03/2009 17:58

Like it, but not shortened to Aggie.

peasholme · 11/03/2009 17:58

I know two lovely Agnes-es (sorry, can't fathom the plural) In the same class and another in the year below! So not at all odd and certainly not off the wall enough for ridicule.

CrushWithEyeliner · 11/03/2009 17:58

Love it - classy classy name on the rise again, do like the french with the soft g better......

Josiepie · 11/03/2009 18:09

Really love it - much underused, I think.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 11/03/2009 18:10

love it

troutpout · 11/03/2009 18:11

ooh i like it

changer22 · 11/03/2009 18:13

I love it. I wish I'd used it but too late now (have another child with an A initial). FWIW I love Agatha too and know a very sweet one.

sweetkitty · 11/03/2009 18:13

Sorry I don't like it either

I had an Aunt Agnes nn Nancy

in Scotland Senga is a nn for Agnes too

dragonbutter · 11/03/2009 18:14

i was just about to day
Agnes is fine
Senga is not.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 11/03/2009 18:18

DS would have been Agnes

peasholme · 11/03/2009 18:27

Just realised that this means I know three Agneses. Plus a Mum who is an Agnes too!

MrsTweedy · 11/03/2009 18:28

It's lovely pronounced the French way; Ann-yes.

Senga was the name of a model whose real name was Agnes in a Bunty story. Or it could have been Mandy or Judy it was a v v long time ago and none of you will know what I'm talking about.

Hulababy · 11/03/2009 18:53

I don't like it sorry.

atowncalledalice · 11/03/2009 18:53

I love it. If I had had a DD, we would have called her Cecily Agnes (French pronunciation, Ann-yes).

TheFallenMadonna · 11/03/2009 18:54

I like it.

Nancy66 · 11/03/2009 19:07

I love it. I don't know why but some old lady names are just too 'old lady' and don't sound right: Ethel, Ada, Marjorie - but then others sound great - Agnes being one. good choice.

subtlemouse · 11/03/2009 19:12

Aggie - Ugh(ie)

piscesmoon · 11/03/2009 19:15

Hate it -bound to be Aggie.

neversaydie · 11/03/2009 19:33

I like it. Short, old fashioned and easy(ish) to spell. If you or your dd don't want it shortened, just refuse to answer to anything other than the full name. Just takes a bit of determination. (Says she who has never answered to Di in her life!)

Greedygirl · 11/03/2009 20:10

Love it!

RachieB · 11/03/2009 22:43

hate it

beaniepix · 12/03/2009 18:51

Love it!

Also Agnes in 'David Copperfield' is a wonderful character whom I have always loved.

brimfull · 12/03/2009 18:56

love it
