I love the name Agnes, but is it too old-fashioned and fusty? Will it cause ridicule in the playground?

It's horrible imho.

ohdearwhatamess · 12/03/2009 19:22

LOve it (but not Aggie)

shonaspurtle · 12/03/2009 19:25

I'm quite surprised at the mainly positive response (although opinions do seem a little polarised).
I do prefer the French pronunciation, and like the look of it when written with the grave accent, but feel it might be a little pretentious as a first name since we are not French - I think we could get away with it as a middle name. But it's harder to find names that fit with it then, as most of the other girl's names I like end in "a".

Maybe we'll have a boy

don't like it at all
how about Ines/Inez instead?

mumzy · 15/03/2009 09:06

FWIW I prefer the French version of Agnes which is spelt Ines (pronounced An'nes) it sounds softer and prettier

seeker · 15/03/2009 09:09

Don't like Aggie, though. And you can't stop it happening!

Coldtits · 15/03/2009 09:11

I think it's horrible.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 15/03/2009 09:28

I like the French pronouciation but not the English

lulalullabye · 15/03/2009 09:34

Anis is 'old' english for Agnes. Just to add a twist

TabithaTwitchet · 15/03/2009 19:04

Quite like Anis but think it is too unusual ie nobody will know how to spell it, everyone will say "pardon?" when she tells them her name. I think Ines/Inez is too obviously not British too.

By the way I also hate Aggie, not really a fan of shortening names at all (mine has a v obvious shortening that I never answer to) My daughter also has quite a long name with a well known short form, when I say her name people always ask "Oh, do you call her/ shorten it to X?" To which my reply is "No, whyever would I do that?"

Hi! So my name is actually Agnes and it's never been something that I've been teased for. I myself think that it's a pretty nice name. Where I live the name is actually quite common. In my old middle school I think there was about three other girls named Agnes. I personally think Aggie sounds ugly and wouldn't want to be called that. A short for Agnes that i think sounds a little prettier is Nes/Ness, it has a similar sound to Tess or Jess.

bluebabydinosaur · 01/03/2019 08:24

I dont like it sorry. It doesnt sound a very pretty name to me.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/03/2019 09:20

I think it’s ugly sorry. I don’t like how it sounds. Aggie is awful.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/03/2019 09:33

To harsh sounding to me.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 01/03/2019 10:01

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/03/2019 20:40

FoxyStoatontheProwl · 01/03/2019 21:20

Switsy · 01/03/2019 22:31

Ten year old Aggie is in the playground wearing her pinny and rollers and yelling at the other kids to keep the noise down.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 02/03/2019 00:21

Agnes is truly horrible, sorry OP you did ask.

Beeziekn33ze · 02/03/2019 00:38

Bumblebeesmum · 02/03/2019 10:19

abiirthdaycake · 02/03/2019 12:54

Come on guys, you're being very rude to 9-year-old Agnes

bridgetreilly · 02/03/2019 14:18

I like it a lot and I can't imagine it raising so much as an eyebrow in the playground.
