A serious question- is silly, bold or cool?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

angrypixie - oh christ, are you another one of those dreadful teachers who thinks it's acceptable to snigger about and mock your pupils' names?

angrypixie · 09/03/2009 21:46

'one of those dreadful teachers'???

No, just a human being - who spends a lot of their life using the name you decide upon for your child. We are not super human and we snigger at dreadful names obviously not in front of a child.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 21:48

Oh, only behind their back? Well that's fine then.

angrypixie · 09/03/2009 21:53

Glad to hear you never have a bad word to say about a child to another Mum/friend/dp. You really are a paragon of virtue, or perhaps I should be glad that you will tell Wolf to his face that his name is daft. Teacher's aren't angels, no different from anyone else on this thread who think it's bonkers.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 21:56

Do you know what - I can hand on heart say that I have never had a bad word to say about a child. Maybe I'm in the wrong job. Or maybe you are!

angrypixie · 09/03/2009 22:05

You are an angel, never a bad word about a child but yet willing to write off a complete stranger as a 'dreadful teacher' and 'in the wrong job' on the basis of a single comment. Luckily I am quite sure of myself. I am a great teacher and my human frailties do not detract from that.

Let's not hijack this thread any further it must be very dull for everyone else.

Good night, and sweet dreams

fuzzywuzzy · 09/03/2009 22:06

It's a pretty common German name, I know two Wolf's one is Wolfgang and the other just plain Wolf. I certainly never forget his name!

seeker · 09/03/2009 22:11

"seeker - I think it probably depends largely on whether you live in an area full of narrow-minded, provincial troglodytes, or somewhere a bit more metropolitan."

So long as you are sure your child is never going to come across any narrow minded provincial troglodytes (charming use of language, by the way) then call him whatever you like.

Personally I don't regard naming another human being as an opportunity to show the world how free thinking, unconventional and - what was it? Oh yes - metropolitan I am. I think of it as giving a gift to my child that will help their confidence and self esteem. Not to make them a potential figure of fun. But that's troglodytes for you.

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 22:12

angrypixie - have you not been here long? MNers around the world will be getting out the popcorn to watch a good fight. They love it. But if you can't stand the heat...nighty night.

Boco · 09/03/2009 22:15

Goodness this is the spikiest baby name thread evah! Angry pixies and troglodytes all over the place!

I even bought the mn name wolfie in the name auction because I heart wolfie smith. come the revolution!

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 22:20

seeker - re: your third paragraph, neither do I. But I also don't see the need to tailor my choice of name around the preferences of the aforementioned trogs.

Klingon - now there's a name to conjure with!

sw1 · 09/03/2009 23:19

Walf? Wolf? Clingons???

Mummyfor3 · 09/03/2009 23:23

No. Too Hitler Youth-y.

minouminou · 09/03/2009 23:28

Go a bit more Scando maybe? Ulf? Ulfgar? Middle name material i reckon.

seeker · 09/03/2009 23:41

Can you REALLY not imagine what it would be like to be an 11 year old boy starting Secondary school called Wolf? Because I can - an I'm a troglodyte. I would imagine that it would be so much easier for all you sophisticated metropolitan types, with your skinny lattes and Jimmy Choos.

MadaMoo · 09/03/2009 23:50

I too am in the "a name is for life" boat.

I just do not get it!

thumbwitch · 09/03/2009 23:52

not keen on it in the UK, tbh. Not having read all the thread, have you been watching too much CSI Miami?

redpyjamas · 09/03/2009 23:52

how about Beowulf as an alternative?

MadaMoo · 09/03/2009 23:59

Or Werewolf?

I still do not get it!

Sorry I just could not resist...
