A serious question- is silly, bold or cool?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LouMacca · 09/03/2009 17:02

No. Please don't.

blackrock · 09/03/2009 17:04

I'm with Noddy Holder on this one. Where I live not an eyelid would flutter. Just think of the social mix your child may come across, as where I grew up, this name would have made fabulous target for bored kids.

Boco · 09/03/2009 17:06

Wolfgang's parents from Bolton are living in London, and I think it's a very good name and refuse to believe he'll be bullied because he'll be fab. That thing about the mousy kid at school called Wolf - I think that if he said he was called 'kevin' or 'clive' that'd be FAR worse, Wolf makes him COOL! Go Wolf!

cazinski · 09/03/2009 17:14

Hmmm, sorry can't agree that it's cool. Odd maybe.

I live in London too now-most people still do have some sense down here thankfully!

Boco · 09/03/2009 17:26

Bah to your London sense! Bring on the Germanic weirdness.

randomname · 09/03/2009 17:53

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf, what's the time mr wolf etc

seeker · 09/03/2009 18:24

Oh don't be silly. He'd be followed round by groups of the other kids howling. It's just cruel.

Peachy · 09/03/2009 18:26

Very odd choice IMO. No. Indeed I would be prepared to beg no. Normally I say its your choice.... but no.

Middle name of Wolfgang and Wolfie as nickname OTOH I like,, funny huh?

mrsruffallo · 09/03/2009 18:27

Would not rule out Wolfgang-I love it!
I am happy that so many of you recognise its coolness!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/03/2009 18:28

Wolfgang is a perfectly respectable German name. Wolf is an invitation to ridicule.

MsBeauregarde · 09/03/2009 18:28

I don't hate it, but it wouldn't suit my mummy's leg-hugger shy boy!!

seeker · 09/03/2009 18:31

But aren't you given at least a little pause by how many people thing that it will make life difficult for your little boy?

mrsruffallo · 09/03/2009 18:34

LOL at Peachy

seeker - I think it probably depends largely on whether you live in an area full of narrow-minded, provincial troglodytes, or somewhere a bit more metropolitan.

fruitbeard · 09/03/2009 20:07

My cousin decided, at the age of 29, that he would only answer to the name of Wolf.

He's now 44 and still single...

So although I do like Wolfgang as a name, I can't think of someone called Wolf without thinking of my weirdy cousin (whose real name is Neil)!

frazzledoldbag · 09/03/2009 20:09

Troglodyte is one of my favorite words. So wonderfully descriptive. Good point, Sobranie

Foxie!!

edam · 09/03/2009 20:52

I used to know a lad from Huddersfield called Zoltan. Sounded very funny indeed in a broad Yorkshire accent: 'coom 'ere, ower Zoltan'.

His parents were originally from Hungary so it was a very respectable name, just sounded odd the first time you heard it. Especially on a spotty teenager.

No really don't like it. Sorry to be blunt.

angrypixie · 09/03/2009 20:57

I've taught a few children with daft names in my time but Wolf????

I'll try it out for you in the staffroom tomorrow.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 09/03/2009 21:00

I live in the sort of achingly metropolitan area that features in cutting-edge novels, yet still I know that there would be a barely-suppressed titter when little Wolf joins the anarcho-syndicalist playgroup.

Now, Wulfric and Athelstan are fab names. Wish we'd called dd Berengaria.

Mintyy · 09/03/2009 21:01

Don't like it either. Wolfie would be ok, as tribute to Citizen Smith.

.

Meglet · 09/03/2009 21:01

It would be a fun middle name, but not for a first name.
