Complete lack of imagination - need a girls name!

Hello everyone!

I'm 28 weeks pregnant with #4 and I have to admit that time is flying by with terrifying haste and we still haven't got a name picked.

Our other three kids have fairly Scottish names (or, as in the case of our daughter a name that could pass as Scottish - Erica) and I'd like to continue that trend with the new baby who we have been told is a girl.

Problem is that we can't agree on anything! I'd rather avoid names that end in -y or -a to prevent clashes with the other children and I'd rather not have a gaelic concoction with twenty billion consonants and a vowel. Similarly, if there are more than 100 of a name on last year's Scottish name register it'll be discarded because I really don't want my kids to be defined by the initial of their surname.

The only name I've come up with that I like is Greer but hubby isn't feeling it. His sole suggestion thus far has been Daisy which is cute, but not Scottish and ends in a -y so it's far from my dream name.

Any suggestions? I can't believe it's this hard even though I'm being ridiculously picky

How could I forget Elspeth - it was our top choice for a while but then the popularity of Ellie/Elsie/Ella names put me off it a bit and then SIL said she wanted Elsie. Still think is a great name

LavenderStar · 06/03/2009 15:47

Try babynames.merschat.com/. You can select gender as "female" and origin as "Scottish". I was going to post them on here for you, but there are loads!

Arden?

Blottedcopybook · 06/03/2009 17:15

I love loads of these!

Arden is a particularly dodgy area of Glasgow so that one is out! My Mum is Fiona, my Nan is Elspeth and my Aunt is Muriel (although I love that). Erica is the Latin for Heather so Heather's out, Kirsty is my best friend and another friend called her daughter Doone so those are all out!

I love Isobel/Isabelle in particular though.

(I think if I'm honest, I am just writing off every other name because I like Greer so much )

Bella73 · 06/03/2009 17:18

If you're not keen on popular names, Isabelle/Isobel/Isabella etc is HUGELY popular here in the UK (both where I am in the SE but also where my parents live in Midlands). But maybe not in Scotland.

Would family names be out of the question though? I wouldn't want to use my mum's name but would def consider my aunt and did in fact name DD1 after my grandmother.

Bella73 · 06/03/2009 17:19

And if you love Greer, then just use it

Blottedcopybook · 06/03/2009 17:35

I just don't fancy the ructions if I pick one family member's name over another! I really do love Greer but hubby isn't having it.

Rowan?

frazzledoldbag · 06/03/2009 19:57

blotted - what is the origin of Greer? It's very unusual isn't it?

LiffeyAndFriends · 06/03/2009 20:31

What about Annabel Skye, the name picked out for frazzled's baby! (boy)

I don't like Greer. Very ugly.

Beatrix, Juliet, Meredith, Margot/Margaret, Vivien - none of those end in a or ie or y.

frazzledoldbag · 06/03/2009 20:37

hello liffey [waves]
Where have you been - I need your help!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate all boys names now and am stuck.
I take it you don't think I could get away with Annabel for my boy then..............please come and visit my Campbell and Lysander threads soon!

Sorry to hijak thread BTW.

weepootle · 06/03/2009 20:49

I love Mirren, think it would go nicely with your other names.

dragonbutter · 06/03/2009 20:52

I like Innes.
I know it's a boys name but i think it would be nice for a girl too.

dizzydixies · 06/03/2009 21:12

we have Ismay as one of DD3's middle names - its similar to Isabella?

Meredith is one of my favourite names but it just doesn't fit with the other kids.

According to thinkbabynames.com the origin of Greer is as follows:-

The girl's name Greer \g-reer, also used as boy's name Greer, is pronounced gryr. It is of Scottish origin. Surname and variant of Gregory (Latin) "watchful, vigilant". Notable in the 1940s and 1950s due to actress Greer Garson

Hi, sorry to butt in! I'm pregnant and wanted to call my baby either Greer or Ellis, unfortunately I'm having another boy!!!!! I think Ellis is a lovely name though, or how about Grainne, pronounced Granya I think. Good luck!

BikeRunSki · 17/03/2009 21:20

I ADORE Ailsa!

Blottedcopybook · 19/03/2009 07:55

Zeesmum You could get away with those for a boy!

I like Ailsa too, it's pretty
