ds1 is called Bréagh, (pronounced bray)
we have a girls name already but cant think of a boys name that will compliment our son's. we want an irish name as our son's is irish and we dont want a name that someone we know has. any suggestions would be lovely.

I was going to call DD Oisin if she was a boy.

The northern Irish tend to say Osh-een or Uh-sheen, I have noticed. In the part of Ireland my dad comes from, they say Oh-sheen. Either way, it is beautiful.

I also love Phelim / Feidhlim, which I think means 'ever good' or 'forever good'.

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:25

Deeblindmice

'Uisneagh' is that scot's gaelic for Oisin?

I have seen Ossian and read that it's Welsh, so it's quite a versitile name really, most people would be familiar with a version of it!

Tn0g · 03/03/2009 09:27

Oisin is a lovely name and was on my list when I gave birth to, 'The Wild Thing'

We also toyed with Fintain but ended up plumping for Gabriel/Gabe...which has proved to be quite ironic really, given his very non-angelic demeanour.

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:29

ha ha Tnóg 'the wild thing'. I have one of those!

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:31

My godchild is Gabriel, and he's 7. He sent me a cute letter last week saying 'call me Gabe now I'm not coming to visit you til december".

ah bless. I'm filing it in my Gabriel folder, to show him when he's older.

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 03/03/2009 09:33

Cavan? maybe not very unusual...

I heard of a Feckin although not sure of spelling!!

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:37

Terminfeckin?? village in co louth. I've been there. hilarious. but no!

Tn0g · 03/03/2009 09:44

Liffey, that's very sweet.

My Gabriel morphed into Gabe on his eigth birthday when he suddenly started gelling his hair and talking with a Dart accent, even though he only visits Dubo maybe once a month, and his very latest thing is bashing the hell out of a set of drums first thing every morning along to The Ting Tings' cd.

Holy mother of God what have I reared?

I'm a jibbering wreck.

Tn0g · 03/03/2009 09:45

Termafeckin is hilarious, my mother goes there regularly with the I.C.A....

Tn0g · 03/03/2009 09:48

How about, Aidan?

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:48

oh it's unavoidable! funny, my dd wants a drum too! I say no way!

she loves Pinks' "so what!" I heard her yelling singing "i'm going to start a fight" we had a mini row about whether those really were the words! she won.

LiffeyBag · 03/03/2009 09:50

Must go now, actually, guess where I'm going, I'm going into Breagh! ha ha. Seriously.

Tn0g · 03/03/2009 09:52

I reckon I had such a repressed childhood I've boosted G's confidence level too much

Anyway..

Manus and Conal were on my shortlist but only DD's so far. Mentioned already but also love Phelim. (pronoiunce faylim rather than feelim like it is some places. Can also be pronounced fielim - very confusing but still love it)

TiggyR · 03/03/2009 11:07

It's a bit like Phlegm though...

SJisontheway · 03/03/2009 11:14

Funnily enough that's what DH said so we'll never get to use it but I still love it. BTW - OP I love Bréagh - love the spelling. Great name!

slightlyharried · 03/03/2009 11:29

howabout Emmet ... though sounds a little medical

annh · 03/03/2009 11:42

DS1 has Tiarnan as his middle name, DS2 Lochlainn. I would be wary of using a lot of the names given here unless you actually live in Ireland as your child will spend their whole life spelling it out and have the pronunciation mangled by everyone. I once had some dealings through work with a Cathal (Charles) and it used to make me wince to hear how everyone else pronounced it! Presumably he was used to being called a variety of names, given that we were in London. I have a nephew called Eoin (Owen) the spelling of which caused much hilarity in my office when he was born. One of my colleagues said " only the Irish could take a line of vowels from Countdown and make a name out of it!"

laughalot · 03/03/2009 11:45

I have a aidan

ten10 · 03/03/2009 11:57
