Judith or Julia?

Missmodular · 02/03/2009 16:10

I'd love to call my next dd Judith - Jude for short - but I'm worried the full name sounds a little austere. So am thinking of Julia as a 'safer' option. However, not so keen on the nickname 'Jules' which it will inevitably become!

What do people on here think?

What about Judy?

MumOfBaby · 02/03/2009 16:17

Julia or Juliet are soooooooooooooooooooooo much nicer. Jude is nice for a girl or a boy but Judith is just disasterous in my opinion- surely that is a very old lady's name? I have an old aunt judith. No No No.

Of course it's your opinion that counts

IwishIwereonthebeach · 02/03/2009 16:17

I love both names and have good friends with both. Jude is a better shortening than Judy as its more funky, but I don't think Judith is too austere. It writes beautifully as well.

Julia is lovely too and shortens nicely to Jules.

Go for it!

MaryAnnSingleton · 02/03/2009 16:17

why can't you just go for Jude as it is (I knew a female Jude)

Sidge · 02/03/2009 16:20

Julia or Juliet.

MUCH nicer than Judith.

MrsMattie · 02/03/2009 16:21

Juliet is the nicest of all, I think.

Julia is nice.

Not keen on Judith.

Jude is a boy's name, to me.

IwishIwereonthebeach · 02/03/2009 16:23

Oh please don't diss Judith! The Judith I know is fantastic, pretty and has loads of friends. I call her Judith because I've known her ages, but her more recent friends call her Jude and she really does suit both. I know she thinks her name is old fashioned, but its actually more unusual, because even 60 years ago, not many people were called it.

It means princess and is hebrew. I don't know about Julia which I still like!!

Quite like Juliet too.

jobschmob · 02/03/2009 16:30

I like Judy too.

atowncalledalice · 02/03/2009 16:56

I like them both, but prefer Julia at a pinch.

ZZZen · 02/03/2009 17:00

find Judith more interesting as a name than Julia, although Julia is also nice

ScummyMummy · 02/03/2009 17:05

Like Julia or Juliet.
Dislike Judith and Judy. Jude is so so.

boogeek · 02/03/2009 17:11

I like Juliet best of all, but also Julia and Judith. Love Jude: think Judy is revolting ;)

VeryAnnieMary · 02/03/2009 17:24

Judith is lovely - but then (a) I have a dear friend called Judith; and (b) I adore the softness of names ending in "th" - feminine without being cloying - like Edith, Ruth, Delyth.

Julia is nice too. Roman, isn't it? Elegant.

Missmodular · 02/03/2009 22:26

Thanks for your feedback! Judith seems to be a name that, on the right person, can really work - thing is, will I be able to tell if my little dd will be the right person when she's born? I guess I'll have to wait and see!

I think Judith is beautiful - really stylish. And Jude is a lovely shortening that will suit from a little girl to a cool teenager! Go for it.

Tinker · 02/03/2009 23:36

Julia is beautiful I think. I think of Diana Quick in Brideshead.

Jude sounds too boyish and Judith is horrible

steviesgirl · 02/03/2009 23:51

What about Juliana as an alternative? Lovely version of Julia imo.

CherryChoc · 02/03/2009 23:52

I love Judith and Judy. I used to like Judy Bloom books and always admired her name!

frazzledoldbag · 03/03/2009 08:42

I prefer Julia and also love Juliet.
Don't like Judith at all - it sounds quite 'hard' (to me anyway).
What about Trudie / Trudy if you like the Jude / Judy sound? (I know a gorgeous baby Trudy)......

troutpout · 03/03/2009 08:50

Judith is beautiful
Julia is very ordinary

BonsoirAnna · 03/03/2009 08:55

Julia is a million times nicer than Judith.

EyeballsintheSky · 03/03/2009 09:17

I love Judy and it's on my shortlist should I ever need one! Not so wild about Judith but would use it as full for Judy.

Am liking Julia as well though. I hadn't thought of that...

Scarletibis · 03/03/2009 09:42

Jude is good. Also Julieanne, Juliet. Judith seems a bit late-middle aged to me and Julia a bit ordinary.

upagumtree · 03/03/2009 10:02

I Love love love Julia! That's the girls name we picked when i was pregnant with dc1. But he was a boy and we called him David. Also love the Beatles song called "Julia" too. One of my all time favourites and if i had a girl called julia i would sing it to her all the time...that's never gonna happen though now

choosyfloosy · 03/03/2009 12:20

I absolutely love Judith, and also Juliet.

Julia has a very particular flavour to me which I don't personally like, but I can see why others do.

Julian for a girl is also possible but more unusual - probably too unusual at the moment, i certainly wouldn't have used it.
